About me:

After being asked if I had a myspace page more times than I can count, I finally gave in. Yes, I'm an old guy. I was online before you were born, most likely. I was a member of the early BBS community, using dialup modems and monochrome screens. Later I was active on Fidonet and Usenet.

My day job is running a small website design and hosting company. I'm an advocate of free software (free as in freedom, not free as in cost). I've been writing software most of my life; mostly in C but I also use Perl and other languages as needed. To read more about my software work, check my Advogato profile.

This is MySpace so I suppose I should point out that I listen to music. I probably even listen to some of the same bands you kids do. I enjoy a pretty wide range of musical genres, some people think that's a little weird. If you have any of Easley Blackwood's Microtonal compositions on your iPod, this may be a warning sign that you're weird too.

I'm an amateur photographer, or maybe it's semi-professional now that my photos are being published more often? For many years I shot 35mm film on a Canon A1 and later a Canon T90. I still use the trusty T90 occasionally but mostly I use a Canon 40D digital SLR these days. You can see a few of my photographs over at flickr. My phone camera stream is also hosted on flickr.

I spend some of my spare time debating cognitive science and theories of consciousness with robot geeks at the Dallas Personal Robotics Group and sifting through robot news. I'm a contributing editor for Servo Magazine, which sometimes publishes my photos as well as my words. I've also written for assorted other magazines. If you want to know more about this sort of thing, check my robots.net profile.

I also have an interest in restoring classic video arcade games. My VAPS profile provides a list of games I'm currently maintaining.

Who I'd like to meet:

If you see me around, don't hesitate to introduce yourself. I prefer to add people as myspace friends who I actually know online or in meatspace.

I'm so glad we got to see you again this year! I'm not sure what is next (maybe something that makes noise?) but everyone was asking if we were going to be at the San Mateo Maker Faire so we should probably come up with something soon. San Mateo hasn't seen the painting robot yet...

I'm so glad you found me. I never knew how badly I wanted to make a robot's hat until I was asked!

So we've caught you technorating yourself again Steve! Happy new year and thank you so much for your recursive blog evangelism......I've been trying to induce another nocturnal fantasia with pizza and coke, per your suggestion....no luck yet! But I will keep you posted. And I will also get GTL in the mail to you ASAP. Btw, the R. in your name doesn't stand for Richard, does it? Now that would be VERY scarily recursive (put your own Texas Rangers through the google machine.....) :)
