Stef McGlinchey may be best known for his work as composer/ lyricist/ producer for Pomegranate, but he also has a rich and varied collection of soundtrack work commissioned for various multi-media collaborations (visual theatre, short films, installations). These soundscapes are now being released under his own name by Integral in the FOR IMAGES series of albums.
Best described as electro-acoustic, ambient or post-classical, these soundscapes are generally electronic, but also make use of an array of traditional instruments and percussion. Layers of processing are used to create a rather nostalgic, melancholy feel. The end result, however, is often uplifting, characterised by the subtlety and lightness of touch heard on Stef's Pomegranate mixes.
For Images 2 explores the more experimental, dark ambient end of the electronic spectrum, calling to mind the work of Tim Hecker, Stars of the Lid and This Heat. The album reaches its climax with the beautifully hypnotic downtempo track 'Satellite', which is like the sun breaking through at the end of an intensely cloudy day.
For Images 3 is the beating, romantic, dancing heart of this instrumental 5 album series. Influences as diverse as Neu!, Steve Reich, Underworld and Durutti Column can be detected in this beautifully crafted set which rewards repeat listening. From tender acoustic guitar ambience to techno/ trance flavoured electronic dance tracks, For Images 3 shows the scope and imagination of the composer at his most accessible best.
For Images 4 is slabs of deep, trance-inducing psyche ambient which wash over you like the sea which thematically links the FI series.
FOR IMAGES 1-4 are now available from I-tunes or your other favourite digital shop.. meanwhile head over to lastfm for more previews and free downloads:::

I'm amazed! I was shockingly drunk last night, and that final G&T bought by your fair hand is in part to blame. Goodness me! Due to that, I wish you DIDN'T remember me, argh! But nevermind! A friend of Derek's is a friend of mine. It was lovely to meet you, and weren't Castanets magnificent?!
