You remember you chose Ani in our competition to win 'The Room of Lost Things'? Well, now she's read the book she left me a message:
'Just wanted to say thanks for the book...what a lovely read! A great mixture of people, place and politics; journeys and geography; love and loss; all mixed up with secrets, lies, and petty crime. very satisfying from start to finish. Despite being from Bristol rather than London I could really identify with the sense of the city - with its multiple layers, invisible boundaries and hidden gems that only a 'local' would know about.'

What a nice winner.

As Stella is too humble to post the great reviews she's had for THE ROOM OF LOST THINGS, as her publisher, we'll have to big her up ourselves:

‘A spellbinding lovesong to a part of London usually demonised ... a book of great sensitivity and passion ... Five years may have been a long time to wait for applause, but in the case of The Room of Lost Things, the wait is worth it’ Independent on Sunday

‘Five years in the writing, it shows Duffy reaching a new peak. Whether or not this proves her break-out book commercially, it is certainly a far greater artistic achievement than anything she has written previously’ Daily Telegraph
(sorry Stella, but yay, girl!)

Great reading last Monday! And it was really lovely to see you.
All you people out there looking at Stella's profile, I strongly recommend that you go to one of her readings. She's multi-talented - not only a great writer but also an actor and improvisor, so her events are just brilliant. Go! you won't regret it (and I know we're her publisher and therefore biased, but really, go and see for yourself!)

no, no champagne sadly, what it did involve though were some lovely people at Braintree Library, a rather nice chilled white, sausage and mash beforehand with the Mrs, and even a bunch of book sales. and Duchy ginger biscuits. all good.

THE SMOKING POET: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS – SPRING 2008

A fine cigar and good literature: two of life's finer pleasures.

THE SMOKING POET publishes flash fiction; fiction; nonfiction; poetry; feature author with novel excerpt; feature poet; book and cigar reviews. We publish work that ignites our imagination, inflames our passion, leaves us with a smoky aftertaste. The Smoking Poet also shares an extensive list of links and resources for writers and the cigar aficionado.

Submissions open year round. Send with editor’s attention in subject line: poetry, cigar reviews and stories to Zinta Aistars; fiction/non-fiction to Russell Rowland. For book reviews, please query first.

For full submission guidelines and contact information, visit:
The Smoking Poet

Spring 2008 Issue Deadline: February 28, 2008

The Smoking Poet also seeks cigar reviews of between 100 and 300 words. Let our readers know what your favorite smoke might be — maybe it's a Nat Sherman Explorer, a Punch Rare Corojo, or a Romeo Y Julieta Reserva Real, or whatever you'd care to share with us. Tell us what you like and why, and maybe even when you like it. Maybe there's a cigar lounge, where everybody knows your name, at which you stop nightly to unwind on your way home from work. If so, tell us about it.
