It's the easiest thing to do. You don't even have to move. When you hold your breath, you can still listen. You have no excuse. So, just listen.
People pine for the universe like it's something so very far away, when, really, we're floating in it. It's right here. We are the universe. Look up, look down, look around. It's all right here. You are here. You can't be anywhere else. So, listen.
"It's dreaming of how things could be, a kind of hope you may not have in the world of reality. That's the ‘stellar' part. The ‘moss' is the real life part, the pleasures and the pain, the stuff that grows, the stuff that dies, the dirty down-to-earth stuff. It's bringing those two things together."
This is how Justin Tracy describes the origins of Stellar Moss. It's simple really. All the best things are. What is music if it's not the combination of these elements, the hidden things that are so easy to hear if we just stop and listen?
The music of Stellar Moss seems to appear just like that, without posture or pronouncement, rare like a pearl, real like a river.
Listen and you'll hear "Blessing In Disguise," a song that transforms a bit of human suffering into something hopeful. The ability for music to pull something like despair aboveground and into the clear air to breathe is a testament to the power of art. The ability for Stellar Moss to actually do it is a testament to their specific art. "The only reason I've ever done anything is to get closer to music," says Tracy. "I don't know what I would've done without music. I can't imagine life without it."
A resident of New York by way of London, Tracy recalls a childhood at an Islington grade school where he'd stealthily make his way into the music room when he was too young to be a part of any band, banging on drums and making any sounds he could.
He ponders a song like "It's Not Over," a lament for a friend that's as much about offering help as it is about coping yourself. "I was watching a good friend of mine lose everything he had to his battle with depression. "I just wanted to tell him that everything was gonna be all right, but it's hard to do that. So, it also became an outlet for me."
Stellar Moss is not far away. It is right here. It's growing. This is a starting point, an invitation. If you accept, you may just end up somewhere else. But that's the whole point, isn't it?
"What I like about a good song is that you feel like you're jumping on a moving train, you're going somewhere. When it drops you back off, you've been taken somewhere you wouldn't usually go. I aim for that."
