I am inspired by queer activism/history, feminism, late nights with plenty of booze, music.
I am inspired by the music of Bikini Kill, Morrissey/The Smiths, Soft Cell, Sleater Kinney, Julie Ruin, Heavens to Betsy, Echobelly, Le Tigre, Bronski Beat, Sister George, Bis, Vile Vile Creatures, Shampoo, X Ray Spex, The Slits, Kirsty MacColl, Soulbossa, Minty, Bratmobile, Hole, Peaches, Blondie, Babes in Toyland, Boy George, Jarvis Cocker, Angelica, Sugarcubes, Fuzzbox, Huggy Bear, 80's Madonna, Gravy Train!!!!, Yoko Ono, 70's Bowie, Altered Images, Manics "Holy Bible" (Only!), and everyone on Cherryade Records.
I am also inspired by these people - Peter Tatchell, Kathleen Hannah (in case you didn't guess already), Holly Johnson, Janni Kowalski, Ali Hili, Quentin Crisp and everyone who threw bricks and lashed out at the police in the Stonewall riots.
I am Ste McCabe and I blend punk rock riffs, pop melodies, dated beats and working class lefty queerness into things often called songs.
Not a fan of narrow-minded right-wing bullshit, modern gay culture, any organised religion and my hatred of the Daily Mail is bordering on obsession. I hope all this makes you smile.
"Cruel, unforgiving and demonically fun...McCabe is kicking against the pricks, and declaring homosexual cliche's bankrupt." - Artrocker
"A full on blend of pure punk guitar and a snippy, snarling, sarcastic world view, marks Ste McCabe out to be the Billy Bragg, or possibly even the Henry Rollins, of gay politics." - The Devil Has The Best Tuna
"Take a drum machine, guitar and overdrive pedal. Add one angry, working-class gay scouser, leave to simmer in years of smalltown homophobia and Viola! - the result will be something like Ste McCabe's Hate Mail, both heartbreakingly vitriolic and endearingly shambolic. " - Gay Times
"LOVE IT! Really like the lyrics, made me chuckle." - Skin (Skunk Anansie)
"A fascinating mix of catchy punk melodies, electrobeats and political lyrics, almost like a jam between The Ramones and Peaches. Do not miss!" - 030 Magazine, Germany
"Infectiously catchy ranting riot-boy punk pop and no hint of any compromise." - Organ
"In this, Ste McCabe's debut album, not only do the Buzzcocks meet Soft Cell, but he marks up one for the underdog. Both insanely catchy and well observed." - Atomic Duster
"It's really exciting to hear British queer music that does not evade the realities of queer life, it is validating and offers listeners a sense of possibility, that music can be something more, you could even call it soulful." - Gaydar Nation
"Transvision Camp" - A nice random lady at Southend Fringe Festival
"In an age where punk music has largely become watered down, commercial, chart-friendly and about as far removed from politics or real people’s lives as you could possibly get, it’s a relief and a joy to hear someone like Ste McCabe." - Is This Music?
