Stephanie Carlin’s fiercely cryptic lyricism brings endless depths of intricacy and nuance to her intensely layered harmonies. Carlin, 20, appeared on the New York music scene four years ago and has brought her original music to nearly 200 notable venues and festivals (CMJ 2009, CMJ 2010, Knitting Factory, The Stone, Public Assembly, Southpaw, Maxwell's Borders, The Living Room, LI Jazz Winterfest 2010). She performs solo with an acoustic guitar in hand, and sometimes with a lilting jazz quartet. Carlin’s husky croon is filled with particles and microtones, and her songs are colorful and crazed. Heavily influenced by the minimalist sounds of Cat Power and Elliott Smith, her original EP “the Agony and Ecstasy of” (2008) is a gut-wrenching documentation on the loves and losses of the human heart. Before the self-released EP was even unleashed, Stephanie was offered a major recording contract - and then promptly rejected it. In her free time, Stephanie writes a lot of ugly songs and occasionally stumbles across a beautiful one. She lives in New York City and is writing her next album while allegedly "studying jazz" and audio engineering at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus.
