Steph’s bio (when I turned 18 I went and saw a Jeff Healey gig at the Thunderdome, I was fortunate enough to met him and we sang a song together , he liked my voice.
So with a few words of encouragment from someone I admire it changed everything and I decided to take it seriously.
I found a guiter player and we did gigs here and there for about a year around edmonton, just cover tunes.(it didn’t work out)
I met my husband and his 2 kids, dated for a year and then we shacked up,we had one more boy in 06.
My brother Ed and I (who is one of the most talented guitar players and songwriters I have ever seen) started to write original material and our first cd was aired on the radio through cbc.
We did alot of gig’s but the most memorable show would have to be opening for Trooper in Fort Mckay, sadly we went our separate ways.( you can listen to our music on myspace under Stephanie and Ed harpe.)
Soulful Underground’s bio(my brother did find me a drummer named Sam Barbour(where ya to boy)from Ferryland,Newfoundland who fit in the first time he played.(this talent is a keeper)
My husband Jeff worked with a guitar player from Germany named Mikhail Oullette,(his hair is almost as long as mine) he listened to our music and liked what he heard.
That following weekend he amazed us, I thought I would never find a great guitar player so quickly, we wrote great music together but something was missing. My son had a sleepover with a friend from school, his mom wendy dropped her son off and we started talkin about my band, she said she used to be a music teacher.
Jeff jokingly asked do you play bass? she replied no but my son does. Dustin Smit jammed with us the next night and was hired on the spot.(Dusty turned 18 on the day of our first bar gig)he moved here from B.C.
We couldn’t have done it without my husband(Jeff Mcginnis) or his sister(Sharon Waughtal)who are our managment team and they handle all our equipment.
Our first gig was sold out at the locker room along with Wil Bellecourt and West of Winnipeg, we did the Lewis Cardinal campaign hosted by Lorne Cardinal(Corner Gas) and opening for Asani.
We also hosted and organized Nina’s dreams benefit concert with artists such as Andy Larondalle and fashion designer Vanna Anderson and sound donation by Axe productions.
Then we got hired by my cousin Fred Mcdonald (a talented artist) to open for Kinnie Star and Shane Yellowbird at the fort mckay music festival.
We volunteered a performance to help raise money for cancer at the world’s longest hockey game. We also work with my friend Sherry (owner of Serendipity talent in edmonton and vancouver) along with other supporters actor Jimmy Herman(North of 60,Dances with wolves and many more)and our friend Manny of OGM productions who we combine performances and equipment.
And back in my life years later Mr. Jeff Healey who I contacted jan 07, we talked once or twice a month most of the year until I got a phone call late one night and he told me the cancer came back.
I am going to miss him dearly and I would not be with my band if it wasn’t for his kind words and support, may he rest in peace and I’ll never forget him. keep on rockin in the free world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was very glad to see you as a friend on our Myspace site. Took a little time to read through your info. Lots better than Indie Charts, eh? Don't know when or if I'll get up to Edmonton, but if I do, will be sure to look for your band gigging somewhere. Till then all the best from me and the gang in FFC. Thanks for the add, too!!! CW
