Stephen's Interests
|
| General | Astronomy, botany, photography, and bicycles. Conservation of habitat and native species. Favor revision of the alcohol warning label to warn of addiction, increased risk of cancer, and the dangers of immoderate consumption such as heart disease, high blood pressure, etc.; see http://groups.myspace.com/alcoholwarninglabels. I am concerned about global warming, and believe there are many things that could be done to help reduce the rate at which it is increasing. Besides the obvious things that people could do (riding bicycles, driving smaller cars instead of SUVs), we could build structures using more quick-growth wood (e.g., more solid walls rather than hollow walls, etc.) to allow our structures to become a bigger carbon sink. We could require roofs that are lighter in color to reflect more light back into space rather than allowing dark roofs that convert light to infrared heat which is trapped by the CO2 of the atmosphere. We could make our roads lighter in color for the same reason. Such measures won't compensate completely for the immense quantities of petroleum and coal being burned in vehicles and power plants, but at least these are steps in the right direction we do not presently seem to be taking. Alternative power sources, such as solar power including photovoltaic cells, which can be used to charge electric cars and power other needs, also would help reduce global warming. I also feel reproductive planning is important. There are so many people that the natural balance of things is upset (fisheries being depleted, etc.). Religious leaders such as the Pope have let us all down to the extent that they outrightly reject measures that could be used in family planning. There is much homelessness, hunger, illness, and other problems in the world today. Tobacco is an important issue, too. Predatory marketing of tobacco around the world, with preteen kids being lured by cigarette ads on TV and getting free samples is terrible. It wasn't long ago that these tobacco practices faded away in the U.S., but those practices are now helping increase cigarette consumption worldwide. Presently about 5 million people die each year worldwide due to tobacco-related disease, but the number is expected to climb to 10 million in the years ahead. See Global Initiative Against Tobacco at: http://groups.myspace.com/giat. Hooking kids on tobacco means that their nicotine addiction will not allow them to quit when they get older in many cases. Nicotine is highly addicting. The worldwide increase in tobacco consumption also is an assault on women's health. Relatively few women smoke worldwide (compared to men). It used to be that way in the U.S. too. But women are being lured into smoking worldwide, and now they are beginning to catch up with men. Smoking physiology (or whatever you want to call it) is different in men and women. Women have an even harder time than men to quit smoking. In the U.S. alone, about 40,000 women die each year of breast cancer, but 60,000 women die of lung cancer. The late 20th century marketing strategy ("You've come a long way baby!" led by the Virginia Slims advertising campaign) resulted in a doubling of the rate of smoking of 12-year-old girls, and shows the success of directed marketing. | | Music | Right now I'm mostly listening to all of Mozart's works (a set of 170 CDs). | | Books | Dictionaries, science and medical texts, journal articles in many fields such as nutrition, alcohol, cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc. The Story of Civilization by Will Durant. Jacques Cousteau’s Amazon Journey. Bowes & Church's Food Values of Portions Commonly Used. Many more. | | Heroes | Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, and others who have advanced science. Anyone who helps protect the natural world against greed-driven destruction. |
