I play guitar and write music for Diminished Men, an instrumental rock outfit I started
with com-padre Dave Abramson in the winter 2002.
I suppose This band reflects are interests, cinema, Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone, Henry Mancini, the films of Akira kurosawa, Roman Polanski, the compositions of Angelo Badalamenti, in my case B-horror, (especially of the Italian variety), ect, ect,
I spent my teens listening to anything from Trout Mask Replica, to Venom, Django Reinhardt, Residents-("Duck Stab"-what the fuk), Les Paul,
-(I'm actually a sea sponge, slurp,slurp,)
Notes on my family:
my father Rupert Peter Schmitt comes from a family rich in the arts, he his two sisters, elaine Schmitt Urbain, Elizabeth betty Schmitt, and brother Conrad Schmitt, and uncle Pete all went to Black mountain College-
learning from the likes of Joseph Albers (Bauhaus) Buckminster Fuller,(Archetect, Futurist, and Philosipher) and John Cage (composer), Robert Rauschenberg (artist), MC Richards (artist, teacher) close family friend the great american sculptor, Ruth Asawa was a student as well.
Elizabeth danced with Merce Cunningham (the godfather of modern dance),
Bucky made the first geodesic dome,
uncle Pete worked with John Cage,
Elaine and Ruth Asawa took art classes from teachers like MC Richards.
On my moms side of the family, my grandfather taught Latin and German at Sonoma
State University, I was told he translated a Kafka book into German.
I hope you've enjoyed my little rant and bad grammar,
-Steve.
You know, a Dim Men/ABA tour of some sort seems inevitable and would probably fucking own. We can both arrange our own custom versions of "Achilles' Last Stand" for the affair...
oooh Bucky! I went to hear him speak at the local university when I was 9 years old, sat the entire two hours fascinated and although I was mostly confused I knew that just by hearing it I would one day understand (my conscious and subconscious would link up in the future, aah innocence of youth!) afterwards I waited for his autograph which was my treasured possession and the only autograph I have ever asked for. About 5 years later my dog Hogosha ('guardian angel', Kurosawa inspiration) ate it up. I did spot a dome when I was 10 out in the middle of nowhere trying to sell Avon and I went inside...very cool! your page has brought up some fine memories! thanks for the request - very kind of you!
