InfluencesReviews “A Night at the Chinese Opera” Scottish Opera

“…special praise to Rebecca de Pont Davies, Stephen Chaundy and Sarah Redgwick for their hilarious harlequinade.”

Rupert Christiansen “The Daily Telegraph”

There are too many to praise, but Damian Thantrey is compelling as Chao Lin; Reno Troilus menacingly eloquent as the counter-tenor Military Governor; the tenor Philip Salmon formidable as both Nightwatchman and Pavarotti-like Marco Polo, while Rebecca de Pont Davies, Sarah Redgwick and Stephen Chaundy are hilariously virtuoso travelling players.

Hilary Finch “The Times”

Thoughtfully cast, with Toby Stafford-Allen and Jane Harrington as Chao Sun and Little Moon, Damian Thantrey as their orphaned son Chao Lin, and Rebecca de Pont-Davies, Sarah Redgwick and Stephen Chaundy as the Actors who disrupt Chao Lin's successful career, A Night at the Chinese Opera is the finest ensemble piece Scottish Opera has produced since The Knot Garden. Scored in blocks of shimmering, sour-sweet colour, Weir's cool, bell-like instrumentation glows in conductor Siân Edwards's hands.

By Anna Picard “The Sunday Independent” Sunday, 20 April 2008

Written for twelve singers (with much doubling of parts) and a chamber-sized orchestra, the piece has no real star roles, but the company's ensemble did it credit throughout, with notable contributions from baritone Damian Thantrey, as the questing Chao Lin, and mezzo Rebecca de Pont Davies, soprano Sarah Redgwick and tenor Stephen Chaundy, as the three actors involved in the Act II Chinese opera parody. Tenor Philip Salmon also had fun with a parody of an Italian aria sung (in Italian!) by the visiting Marco Polo at the beginning of Act III. Sian Edwards conducted the score with precision and pace. This is surely one of Britain's finest post-Britten operas, and one that deserves a place in the repertoire.

George Hall “Opera News”

While the outer two acts provide the backbone of the scenario, the central burlesque, a "Chinese opera" ranging from pathos and irony to slapstick, steals the show. Rebecca du Pont Davies brings terrific panache to her role as leader of the acting troupe, with Stephen Chaundy improvising as wickedly as he acts. There's not a weak link here with a luxury cast that includes Fiona Kimm doubling as the housekeeper and as an old crone, Damian Thantrey as the older Chao Lin, a sinister Military Governor in Reno Troilus, and Nicholas Warden a severe Mongolian soldier berating us, the audience, for defying the curfew.
