   About Stephen Duffy & The Lilac Time

BUY ‘INTRODUCING TOWNES VAN ZANDT VIA THE GREAT UNKNOWN’ NOW (£10 INCLUDES WORLDWIDE SHIPPING VIA AIRMAIL):

Scholar and author Hugh Kenner bemoaned the collapse of “a public for an inexpensive bilingual Dante”. In this age of catastrophe and decline it is hard not to remember fondly The Lilac Times public collapsing shortly after closing time on a damp pavement in Nottingham.

The killer was always considered a “loner” an “outsider”. “We always wondered if something like this would happen. He kept himself to himself with his guns, antidepressants and Stephen Duffy cassettes”.

Witness the reports of misgivings related to the inhabitants of a secluded farmhouse, home to a lilac-wearing cult, escaping members of which appear wild eyed on local TV news.

Or the knitting group meeting in a local hostelry to create woollen miniatures depicting the changing line-ups of The Lilac Time and drawing sniggers from the bar staff.

He spent 30 years in the wilderness but it was a wilderness that included performances on Top Of The Pops in the 80’s 90’s and the first decade of the 21st century. He would often be heard telling the Wood Lane janitors that as Ezra Pound said the modern world “does not exists. Because nothing exists which does not understand its past or its future”. He thinks he is the reincarnation of Jacob Epstein or the king of infinite space. He used to mean something, but only to himself. Having come this far he rightly supposes there is very little point in turning back.

every single element in your body arises from a far distant super nova out in space,

created billions of lightyears ago, so much to age:-),

have a great day.

Tracked down the Memory and Desire double (in a local record shop of all places - how quaint is that?). The tracks in their re-mastered state sound so wonderfully fresh. The copious sleeve notes alone would have made it worth buying Memory and Desire (where alse could you find a deft exposition of 'The Postcard' nestling twixt a pernod anecdote). A beautiful collection and no mistake. x.

Every now and then a song comes along that completely takes your breath away, " Back In The Car Park" is one of those songs. Beautifuly structured, Beautiful vocals, with a simplicity that can only be described as pure genius songwriting. Stephen I applaud your work mate. pgt

(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?
