Stephen Manning's Interests
|
| General | I have more itches than I have time to scratch. (That's just an expression!)
Writing, Web development, movies, fantasy, science fiction, history.
My favorite historical topics are World War II and the Roman Empire. The American Revolution and the Mongol Horde also fascinate me. | | Music | Eclectic.
| | Movies | I watch movies for two reasons: escapism, and laughter. If the movie doesn't provide either of those things, I'm not interested. | | Television | There are a lot of good shows out there but I just don't have the time. I restrict my TV watching to Lost and 24. I miss BSG. | | Books | Recent books read:
Sabriel by Garth Nix
Warriors by Erin Hunter
The Automatic Detective by A. Lee Martinez
The Moorchild by Eloise McGraw

Stephen Manning's Blurbs |
About me:
I'm the author of two nonfiction books about World War II veterans: The Courage of Common Men and Texans Touched by World War II. I interviewed veterans and veterans' family members across Texas, letting them tell their war stories - frightening, tragic, humorous, bizarre. Each chapter focuses on one person's experiences during the war. These books are one generation's message to another, and they're a great read.
Graduated from the Executive MBA program at the University of Texas-Arlington in December 2009. It's a great program designed for people working full-time. The curriculum includes a two-week immersion trip to China.
Served as president of the DFW Writer's Workshop in 2007 and 2008. The Workshop is a 30-year-old nonprofit organization in the Dallas/Fort Worth area dedicated to helping writers improve their craft, find an agent and get published. Its members have compiled a tally of 263 traditionally published books. This is a fantastic organization and I recommend it to anyone in the area who wants to learn more about writing well. I am the president of the DFW Writers' Workshop, an association dedicated to helping writers hone their craft and produce publishable quality work. We meet every Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the heart of the DFW Metroplex. For more information, check out its MySpace page and its web site.
I'll probably write more historical nonfiction, but right now I'm putting finishing touches on a fantasy novel and an action/adventure novel. I've been writing a lot of children's stories as well.
I used to be a page designer, graphic artist, copy editor and headline writer in the newspaper biz. But since 1998 I've been a Web developer and currently work as a hospital's webmaster. In the past I've developed with ASP and Cold Fusion. I've since moved to .Net and C#. I have experience with Sharepoint 2007, having launched two web sites on that platform.

I'm a military brat and have moved around a lot. I was born in Iceland, and spent several years in Europe growing up. I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to do a lot of traveling.
Fun facts about me:
I was born in Iceland.
I grew up in Spain and England.
I once backpacked from one coast of England to the other, following the course of Hadrian's Wall.

Who I'd like to meet:
If you live in the DFW area, love to write and are interested in improving your craft, consider coming to visit the DFW Writers' Workshop on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
