Pruitt's Interests
|
| General | Books, Theater, Dance, Opera, Music, Movies, Swimming in Barton Springs, Camping anywhere, Running around Town Lake, Mountain Biking (in my really lame way), Kayaking (whitewater, not flatwater, yawn), Art, Design, Sculpture, Sleeping in the back of the truck and mastering the constellations, Games of skill and chance, especially Chess, Scrabble, Backgammon, and... oh hell, pretty much anything... Travel, Writing, Reading, and Making use of my mad visual skills. Oh, and also occasional forays into Absinthe and Mezcal. | | Music | Anything that doesn't suck and has some soul. Particular favorites include, but are not limited to The Clash, Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, Bill Frisell, Neil Finn, Dark Water Hymnal, Golden Arm Trio, John Coltrane, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, David Baerwald, Jack Johnson, Television, Regina Spektor, Massive Attack, Cowboy Junkies, Charles Mingus, Wilco, Public Enemy, David Gray, MC 900 ft Jesus, Man or Astroman, Elliot Smith, Hooverphonic, Holly Cole, Tom Waits, Over the Rhine, Low, Laurie Anderson, Van Morrison, Sonny Rollins, Camper Van Beethoven, Billy Bragg, The The, PJ Harvey, The Orb, Steve Earle, Delerium, and Thelonius Monk. Oh also Yanni. Just kidding. | | Movies | See the description of my musical tastes. I don't see as many movies as I'd like to, but there was a time in the early 90's when I worked as a projectionist and saw everything that came out. In general, you can never go wrong with Buster Keaton, so mark him down as my favorite. Others might include The City of Lost Children, Children of Men, Delicatessen, Serenity, Doctor Strangelove, La Femme Nikita (with Anne Parillaud in French. Purrrrr), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Raising Arizona (okay, most things by the Cohens), The Maltese Falcon, The Unbelievable Truth, Trust, Ninochtka, Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, The Dish, The Usual Suspects, Young Frankenstein, Repo Man, The Pillow Book, The Commitments, The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover, Naked Lunch, Casablanca, F is for Fake, etc. | | Television | Not much. I moved two months ago, don't have cable hooked up, and you know, I'm thinking that my TV still isn't plugged in. Is that true? I think so... I guess that says something about how busy I've been, and how much TV I watch. | | Books | I worked in book stores for about twelve years, so I'm picky, but here is a sampling of books you absolutely Must Read. Right away. Or at least a few you probably haven't heard of.
Towing Jehovah by James Morrow (okay, anything by James Morrow)
Fuck, Yes! by the Reverend Wing F. Fing
60 Stories by Donald Barthelme (bless his soul)
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami (again, you can't really go wrong with him)
The Lucifer Principle by Howard Bloom
Blink by Malcolm Gladwell (also The Tipping Point)
The New Inquisition by Robert Anton Wilson
The Mind's I by Douglas Hofstadter
Influence by Robert Cialdini (seriously, just open it)
The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler
Absolutely Nothing to Get Alarmed About by Charles Wright
The Lighthouse at the End of the World by Stephen Marlowe | | Heroes | We need some serious heroes right now... |

Pruitt's Blurbs |
About me:
I'm a former aerospace science geek who now pretends to be an artistic type, designing scenery and lighting for theater, dance, and events all over the place. I've also been known to do some video and photographic work - after all, it's Austin, so whatever pays the bills and supports my slacker lifestyle.
In my seasonally copious free time I enjoy paddling whitewater, running around town lake, climbing rocks, traveling to far away places to take pictures of statues and mountains, hauling backpacks up said mountains, and reading books that make me even more of a nerd than I already am. This level of geekiness does not come easily, believe me.
To see more about my design work and photography, take a look at that website:

And for more images of shows and my travels, here's a flickr link too:

Several projects are in process, but here is a selection of the design work I'm doing in the near future...
Soul to Sole - Tapestry Dance Company. June 6 & 7.
Big Range Dance Festival. June 6 - 15.
Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance June 21 & 22.
Aztlan Dance Company - Long Center. June 26 - 29.

Who I'd like to meet:
Everyone, but especially... Geeks who build robots that do weird things. Dancers who have something interesting to say. Aliens. Musicians who can appreciate it when Charles Mingus starts yelling out in the middle of songs. Female rock climbers (mmmm... shoulders). Okay, male rock climbers too. People who play chess, or even better, people who like to play random games, like mancala, or go, or jenga. Mothman. Bigfoot. The Flatwoods Monster. People who have lived in haunted houses. water people. fire people. air and earth people can go to hell. President Barack Obama.
