Justin Jones and Stephen Lambert are the dual ministry-force known as “Steps of The Just”. Few compare with the passion and anointing possessed by both individuals. Justin and Stephen have allowed God to cultivate and grow their gifts of singing and song-writing over the course of their entire lives. And it is now that He has afforded them the platform to bring their brand of ministry to a dying world. Musically, they are reminiscent of the legend acts of 80s and 90s R&B. Yet their message is uncompromisingly Christ-centered and rooted in the Gospel of Jesus. Steps of the Just collectively offer up testimony of dedication, steadfastness, obedience, and endurance.
Justin Jones, originally of Denver, Colorado relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio with his mother and two sisters at the age of 17. Justin discovered his love for music early on, and had dreams as most do of one day making a successful career out of music. A year after arriving in Cincinnati and while attending Woodward High School, Justin and a friend desired to enter a popular talent-contest. At this time, Justin was introduced to Stephen Lambert through a mutual friend who believed victory was certain with Stephen’s involvement. Though accomplishing only a third-place finish, the group believed they had championship potential. It was mutually decided that the group would remain together in pursuit of musical stardom.
Though the group over-flowed with an over-abundance of talent, there were many wars being waged within that hindered substantial progress. The group had extended to seven members, but all faced being pulled away by the strains, stresses, and commitments of young-adult life. Family illnesses, work schedules, marriages, and children seemed to be slowly sucking the vigor and enthusiasm out of the majority of the members. However, the biggest battle faced was what type of music to pursue. The entire group had all been raised with a high respect and reverence for God. It became extremely difficult to pursue mainstream popular music, as a constant conviction of a higher purpose and calling seemed to constantly loom overhead. Collectively it was decided that Christian Music would be the chosen route, as a desire to please God reigned over and above any desire for riches and fame. The group fittingly became known as A.O.L., Apostles of the Lord.
Though the vision for A.O.L. was jointly shared by all, availability, and funding were not. Though at one time all fellowshipping at the same church, the commitment to A.O.L. slowly began to dissolve. However, Justin and Stephen still burned deeply with a message from the Lord that they knew they had to release. Though A.O.L. was all but over, both men remained faithful that God would allow them to pursue music ministry.
While being faithful husbands and fathers, they each patiently waited for the Lord to open a door. They continued to sharpen their gifts and remained ready for anytime God saw fit to grant increase. In 2004, Justin was re-united with former group-member, Matthew Bracey. It was at this time that Justin discovered that Matthew had mobilized his own music ministry locally, and had appeared on multiple independent releases. After much discussion and fellowship, it was decided that Justin would help bolster the newly budding independent label, Ain’t Yo Average Music Ministry.
In excitement, Justin presented the new venture to Stephen Lambert. Having maintained an ongoing friendship and passion for Christ and music, Stephen and Justin decided to re-ignite a fire that had seemed to be extinguished. Unwilling to be hindered any longer by lack of commitment, Justin and Stephen decided that they would reconcile their former group between the two of them. In this, they formed the Gospel duo now known as “Steps of the Just”.
Though trials and tribulation attempted to again stop them from going forth, they persevered. They were determined to birth what the Lord had placed in them over ten years ago. 2009 marked the release of the debut album entitled, “Distance of Love” on the Ain’t Yo Average Music imprint.
The evidence of the power of their ministry extends beyond the stage and studio. These devoted men of God always place their families first, and strive to please the Lord with their lifestyles. They use music as icing to sweeten an already delicious cake. So much more lies ahead for this amazing tandem. As they have always done, they are sure to remain faithful in their doing, and allow God to grant the increase. Their ministry will surely touch you deeply, as they desire to allow the Spirit of God to move their listeners into a place of worship, and pure enjoyment of relationship with the Most High God.
Steps of the Just... We're to brothers that love music and giving the gift of God. Our style is a bit different than most of what people call gospel, but the Good News is the Good News. We been singing for about 10 years and the desire to go on is still there.
