The video shows us playing "Black Magic Woman" in 107F heat at The Antlers in Springville, 7/18/09. As well as the usual suspects we had Dave Prado on keys that day plus a guest spot by Rick on sax.
Lead singer & guitarist Pete Grant hails from London, England and has a performing history there that goes back to the Seventies, both as a musician and an actor. In the last few years before relocating to the Central Valley, Pete had been involved in music management and promoting bands through web sites online. He was involved with Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green, Cream lyricist & musician Pete Brown and sax maestro Dick Heckstall-Smith, whom Pete managed for four years. They also published the book, 'Blowing The Blues' together in 2004, the year Pete got married and moved to Porterville, CA. (The book is still available on Amazon.com or at gigs, by the way!)
Pete began to get involved in the local music and theater scene, and while playing some acoustic blues at a festival at the Barn Theater in October, 2006, was introduced to lifelong Porterville resident Bob Bartlett. Bob had played bass for many Central Valley bands over the years, including lengthy spells with Ron Trammell, and he and Pete decided to focus on their shared love of blues music by forming The Bobcat Blues Band. With the addition of a drummer, Bob's friend Phil Henry, they made their debut in January, 2007. They gigged throughout that year till things ground to a halt that November. Bob and Pete both did different gigs for a few months, but by March of 2008 Bob and Pete were working together again.
During a Bobcat Blues Band gig in Exeter in August 2007, drummer Vern Verra sat in for Phil Henry. They were also joined that night by guitarist Ben Cline, also an actor musician who has played with many Central Valley bands such as The Redbloods. The combo gelled that night, and in March, 2008 Vern asked the other three to join him for a three night stint at Eagle Mountain Casino. Engaging in extended jams with songs ranging from blues standards to classic rock, the dates went well, and the band decided to stay together as The Stepsons. Vern left soon after to join another band, drummer Sam Frias played with the band for a few lively shows before local Porterville man about town Ted Penic completed the line-up in early summer. In October Pete started selling a CD EP of original blues numbers at gigs and the plan is that 2009 should see the release of the first Stepsons CD
