Interests

  • General

Most of my free time outside of my work as an artist and writer (and these are also my biggest passions in life as well as the way in which I make my living), I spend exploring spirituality and religion and engaging in meditation and Reiki. I don’t get to see my kids Marianne and Sam anywhere near as much as I would like so I do try to spend as much time with them as I can when the opportunity arises. I love going for walks in nature, but you know life is an adventure and pretty much any place is OK by me. Walking through a city can be as stimulating as walking up a mountain or across a desert - it all depends on one’s orientation to the experience really I think. I guess that my main interest in life is just being and engaging fully with life's unfolding story, and watching the world go by. I like cooking too! (vegetarian...)
  • Music

I am a big fan of most types of music. Depending on my mood I can listen to rock, trance, pop, jazz, blues, classical, opera, folk, dance, lounge, world...I don’t listen to much New Age music, finding it a little vacuous, but occasionally find something that grabs my attention. I have one or two select pieces that I tend to use in Reiki classes: Ajad’s ‘Reiki Music Volume 4’ for instance and one or two Tibetan Chant pieces. The player below does not contain any music at all, but this seemed the best place to put it. You will find here some of my radio interviews that I have conducted over the years on the subject of Reiki, and some of the celebrity interviews that I conducted for ‘The Voice of Humanity Healing’ blog. ..

  • Movies

I am a big fan of European cinema; particularly British and French. Hollywood has also produced some fantastic movies over the years and I love film noir, along with the work of Hitckcock, Sirk, Scorsese, Tarantino, Schrader and many more. Favourite movies of the last few years would be ‘The Constant Gardner’, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘Amelie’. I also have a penchant for those chick-flicks that most guys would not have the courage to admit they like such as ‘Pretty Woman’, ‘Sleepless in Seattle’, ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’. Oh and of course ‘Love Actually’.
  • Television

There is very little that I watch on TV. I don’t remember the last time that I sat through a whole episode of anything but it would have been several years ago I think. I do like to have the TV on as background noise when I am working, or if there is a good movie on I might sit and watch that. Generally I am too busy with other things and simply don’t have the time for TV. If I did, I would probably find other things to do.
  • Books

I read a great deal on Buddhist meditation, theory, philosophy, practice etc. I particularly like the work of Jack Kornfield and Ayya Khema and of course Sogyal Rinpoche's 'Tibetan Book of Living and Dying' is a classic and the book that turned me on to Buddhism as a way of life in the first place. I also try to stay up to date with new Reiki books as they appear on the scene. I am also a big fan of fiction though sadly I don't get as much time to read it as I would like. I guess that my favourite authors would have to be Naguib Mahfouz and Cormac McCarthy. Mahfouz’s work is stunning, evocative and encapsulates the essence of what it is like to live in Egypt and he is a damn good story teller, while McCarthy is simply the most incredible shaper of the English language that I have come across in a very long time. ‘Blood Meridian’ is just one of the best books ever written simply because of what McCarthy is able to do with the language. Daphne Du Maurier is also a favourite whom I actually came to after developing a love for her work in the first instance via Hitchcock’s movies. I also love Kafka, Camus, Shakespeare, Tennyson, Hardy...straying into the realm of the poets now. • Heroes

I would have to say that my main heroes would be the Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi and my grandad. Who needs more heroes than that?

About me:

I am a writer and teacher on Reiki and personal development and an ardent believer in there being a spiritual dimension to all aspects of life. Although a school teacher by training, I began to teach Reiki in my home town of Rugby in central England during the late 90’s and at the time, I was one of only a handful of Reiki teachers in central England. Needless to say, I taught this method to a lot of people; some of whom became teachers themselves. After two or three years of teaching Reiki in the UK, I moved to Egypt where alongside my career as an art teacher there, I was able to continue my teaching of Reiki. I returned to the UK after three years in Cairo and began work on my first book. In September 2006 'Reiki Jin Kei Do: The Way of Compassion & Wisdom' was published. It was and still is, the only text on the tradition and lineage of Reiki Jin Kei Do and has become the standard text for teachers within the tradition. I am now in Khartoum, Sudan, teaching art at the prestigious Unity High School and where I am currently working on my next book, the working title for which is ‘The Complete Reiki Bible’. I am a regular contributor and feature writer for a number of magazines, blogs and websites in the spirituality and personal development fields, and will soon be releasing a series of self development and meditation CD’s. I am also in the process of building up ‘OmAhHum’ – a spiritually focused education company – the first part of which ‘OmAhHum Reiki’ is now well established. Reiki teaching continues to take me on journeys of the spirit as well as journeys of a more physical kind, from Lithuania in Eastern Europe to Cairo and Khartoum. Other courses are being developed as time permits. As well as my writing and teaching, as an artist I am currently building up work for an exhibition on the theme of Reiki, which I hope will be shown widely in the not too distant future.

You can hear me talk about my work in some of the many radio interviews that I have given over the years, in the player in the 'Interests' section of this page, along with a selection of the celebrity interviews that I undertook for Humanity Healing as the Editor of ‘The Voice of Humanity Healing’.

You can find details of my work on my website at: OmAhHum and keep up to date with articles, features and news on my blog at: OmAhHum: Steve Gooch's Blog.

OmAhHum Reiki

Om Ah Hum Reiki is a global educational project to reinforce and reintegrate meditative spirituality into the core of the Reiki experience through classes, seminars, books, articles & CD's; thus leading to a recontextualisation of Reiki as a healing method. Through OmAhHum Reiki, I aim to redefine the system away from its current trend towards therapeutic mediocrity and back in the direction of it being a profound practice that can lead to personal liberation. OmAhHum Reiki grew out of a need to provide quality teaching in the system of Reiki that was underpinned by an exhaustive and rigorous understanding not only of the Reiki system itself, but also the underlying principles and methodologies of effective teaching. With an extensive background in education and educational management, I felt that there was a need to begin to raise the standards within Reiki classes, to ensure that the system's integrity would be maintained. What I teach is based on a deep understanding of Reiki from my own personal experience and also from years of research into the origins and methods of the system. OmAhHum Reiki currently has roaming bases in the UK, Egypt, Lithuania and Sudan – the countries that I most often frequent. However classes can be set up anywhere in the world and prices are by negotiation around the prevalent exchange rate at the time.

You can get more information on my classes around the world either by going to my website at: OmAhHum or by contacting me direct at: steve.gooch@myspace.com or at stevegooch1962@gmail.com

Who I'd like to meet:

There are many people that I would like to meet. As a writer and connoisseur of well written prose, high on my list would be Cormack McCarthy for ‘Blood Meridian’ and ‘The Road’. Also Paulo Coelho for ‘The Alchemist’ and ‘Brida’. The latter book I am told is my story, as so many people see me as The Magus, around whom much of the story revolves. I would also like to meet Jack Kornfield (A Path With heart) and Sogyal Rinpoche (The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying) and Ayya Khema (When the Iron Eagle Flies) to tell them what a profound impact on my life their writings have had. It would be great to meet Iggy Pop and tell him what a fantastic track 'The Passenger' is, and Pablo Picasso, because I am in awe of his artistic genius. Stan Lee; the man who created the modern superhero, and to whom I owe a great debt of gratitude as it was through his work at Marvel Comics that my imagination and my creative impulses began to really develop, and thus shape the path of my life. It would also be amazing one day to meet Ranga Premaratna; the lineage head of Reiki Jin Kei Do who was responsible for writing the Foreword to my book 'Reiki Jin Kei Do: The Way of Compassion & Wisdom'. But mostly I would like to see my two amazing children; Marianne and Sam a lot more than I am able to do. I love them both very dearly indeed.

    Love is like a butterfly

    Love is like a butterfly
    in so many, many ways.
It brings a bit of sunshine
    even on gloomy days.
It makes our souls feel lighter
    just to know it's there
    And gives our spirits wings,
as if floating in the air.
    It carries us to places
    that we never knew before
    And comes in many sizes,
    shapes and hues galore.

    Once we've seen it,
we wish to hold onto it so tight
    But like a frail butterfly,
we must allow it free flight,
For if we should try to cage it up
and hold it in a pen,
    We'll surely crush its wings,
    and it'll never fly again.
    To keep that love glowing
    in our hearts each day,
    We must remember always
to give some of it away.

Every little bit we give to
    someone else to share
    Comes back tenfold,
and we've so much to spare.
Put your love on gossamer wings,
    and give it flight;
    It will return to you,
    and bring you much delight.

    Sweet Dreams
    Hugs~♥~Cyndi
