Steve and the band were holed up at Real to Reel studio and Steve's Underground Studio at the end of 2008 and early 2009 recording the follow up to his debut album, I Sometimes Think.
Steve wrote all but a few of these songs himself. He wrote My Empty House with Nashville studio cat and old band mate, Rich Herring; he wrote Something Smells Fishy with North Carolina native, Tracy Brown; and I Think I Love You was written by Tony Romeo for The Partridge Family.
While Steve played and sang everything on I Sometimes Think, his incredible band played on all of Naked's tracks. Richard "Zoot" Blasingame played keyboards, organ, Grandma's accordion, bari sax and sang backup; Brian Hudson played drums and did all of the banging on things on the record; Joe Randolph played bass and Alex Slinin handled the electric and lead guitar work. Steve handled the lead vocals, some of the backup and acoustic and electric guitars.
Steve also got great sessions from Pamela Bishop who sang on Please Don't Leave, My Empty House and I Think I Love You; Ruben Harris playing cello on Naked and Lie; Michael McKenzie doing the trumpet work on My Empty House; and Mark Van Allen (Sugarland) playing pedal steel on Float on Down. Thanks also to Paul Scales and Michael Taylor for some great tracks.
Naked was recorded Jonathan Beckner at Real to Reel Studio and by Steve at his Underground Studio. Glenn Matullo (John Mayer, Shawn Mullins, Indigo Girls) did the mixing and production at Orphan Studio. And Colin Leonard mastered the record at Glenn Schick Mastering. All of the production was done in Atlanta, Georgia.
Original cover art by The Bill Mayer and album photography was by Kevin Garrett. Lindsay Podrid did the art direction with additional photography from W. Scott Chester and Amber Tyree.
Naked is available at Steve's live gigs everywhere, CDBaby.com and Amazon.com. Downloads can be found right here at myspace.com/stevebaskin, stevebaskin.com, digstation.com and at iTunes.
I Sometimes Think All of the songs on Steve's debut record, I Sometimes Think, were performed by Steve.
Adding to the fun, Trey Hollingsworth, Mary Dean, Tracy Fagan, John Lennon and Paul McCartney have writing credits on the album.
Glenn Matullo did the mixing and added some production magic at Orphan Studio in Atlanta. Additional production magic by Tom Durack (B52s, They Might Be Giants) from 1115 Studio in New York.
Influences
My earliest musical memories were from riding in the back of the family Monte Carlo listening to my Dad’s 8-tracks of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Charlie Pride, Sam & Dave, The Fifth Dimension, Percy Sledge and Buck Owens and the Buckaroos. In fact, my very earliest musical memory was of me bouncing up and down on the couch playing air guitar on a toy golf club to Owens’ I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail.
After my uncle taught me the bar chords to Wild Thing, I learned to play guitar to the first six KISS albums and started a band.
Sounds Like
John Mayer, Spoon, Pete Yorn, Kings of Leon, Duncan Sheik and Toad the Wet Sprocket.
In 2006, Steve Baskin released his debut album I Sometimes Think, finally spreading his wings and getting out on his own. Steve played every instrument on the album from guitars to drums to keyboards to mandolin and everything in between.
Steve's shiny vocal melodies and grown up, accessible power pop has earned him invites to play at the Atlantis Music Festival and some of the more prestigious clubs in the South. One of his tracks (How I Feel) appeared on Paste Magazine’s compilation CD..
To support the record, Steve put together a top-end live band. The band includes Alex Slinin (who has engineering credits with Dr. Dre and Eminem) on lead guitar; Joe Randolph on bass; Brian Hudson (Memory Dean) on drums and percussion; and long time collaborator Richard “Zoot” Blasingame on keyboards, accordian, bari sax and backing vocals..
Steve took the band into the studio last year to record Naked, the follow up to I Sometimes Think..
A Georgia native, Steve Baskin began his musical career swinging his Les Paul Deluxe around fronting a 10-piece R&B band called Hugo A Gogo who played with Sam & Dave, The Shirelles, Carla Thomas, Mary Wells and Percy Sledge. The band even opened for The Beach Boys on their 25th anniversary tour..
More recently, Steve worked with Cindy Wilson (of B-52's fame) as the guitarists and vocalist on her first solo project. The Cindy Wilson Band played major clubs, festivals and television - including a national broadcast of Live From Music Midtown on Turner South. As a guitarist in The Cindy Wilson Band he shared the stage with Don McLean, Mike Mills, Edwin McCain and received the thrill of a lifetime performing onstage with June Carter Cash playing "May The Circle Be Unbroken"..
Naked and I Sometimes Think are available at iTunes, DigStation.com, CDBaby, Not Lame Recordings and Amazon.com.
