Steve Cantor was born in Rochester, N.Y. but grew up in Detroit where he was influenced by the sounds of Motown as well as The Beatles. He started playing the guitar at the age of eight mostly teaching himself.
After moving to San Diego, Ca. in 1975 and playing in some local top 40 bands, someone gave him George Benson's "Breezin" album which changed his musical life forever. After wearing out that album learning Benson's solos, he continued to be influenced by other great jazz guitarists like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and Pat Martino.
Returning to Rochester in 1981, he studied briefly at The Eastman School of Music with acclaimed jazz guitarist Gene Bertoncini. Most recently Steve has been studying with the master jazz guitarist, Robert Conti.
Steve has played professionally since 1975 touring most of the USA, Japan and Europe. For the past several years. he has been the musical director for Sonny Turner (former lead singer of The Platters). He is also an arranger and composer and does studio and television work when called upon. Steve currently lives and works in Las Vegas.
Some of the people or shows that Steve has played with are: "Mama Mia", Tom Scott, Patty Smyth, Lesley Gore, The Drifters, The Chiffons, Darlene Love, Rich Little, Debbie Reynolds just to name a few. He has also been the musical contractor for Don Rickles, The Temptations, Shirley Alston Reeves, and Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme.
Recently Steve appeared on The Latin Grammy Awards with Luis Fonsi and The Las Vegas Philharmonic.
