“Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that.” - Steve Earle
Steve Earle’s new album Townes, is his highly anticipated follow up to the Grammy Award winning album Washington Square Serenade. The 15-song set is comprised of songs written by Earle’s friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt.
The songs selected for Townes were the ones that meant the most to Earle and the ones he personally connected to. Some of the selections chosen were songs that Earle has played his entire career (“Pancho and Lefty,” “Lungs,” “White Freightliner Blues”). He learned the song “(Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria” directly from Van Zandt. Earle taught himself “Marie” and “Rake” specifically for making this record. Earle recorded the New York sessions solo and then added the other instruments later on in order to preserve the spirit of Van Zandt’s original solo performances to the best of his recollection.
The track “Lungs,” was produced and mixed by the Dust Brothers’ John King and features Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine/The Nightwatchman on electric guitar.

It's got my good buddy Ray MaGee on pedal steel cookin' up a storm. Enjoy and let me know how you like it. Thanks, Dexter
Steve Earle is going to be on the show called Dakota Sessions. It will be airing on CMT Canada on Saturday 11th at 11:00PM. I can't seem to find any information about Steve Earle appearing on the show. But the concert was filmed last month in June by CMT at The Dakota Tavern in Toronto. The concert was filmed during the day but unfortunately the public was not able to attend. If you go to http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tvlistings/ZCSGrid.do?stnNum=15072&channel=50 and scroll down to Saturday 11th you will find it on the TV listing. The TV appearance will air the same night Steve Earle is performing at Massey Hall, Toronto so I hope I can make it home in time to watch Dakota Sessions with Steve Earle at 11:00pm.
Shit Howdy, just thought I'd stop by and tell y'all again what a great sound you have! We're in the studio again and after a rocky start we're firin' on all eight. I'll upload a new hillbilly rocker when I get the mix right. (Took me 6 months last time) Just kiddin'. Stay tuned and stop by every spell or two. Grace and inspiration to you, Dexter
hey there, im a freelance photographer and writer. i write for several music magazines one of which would very much like to do a review of the toronto show. i am a huge fan and already have a ticket so its perfect! however the venue is saying theres no cameras allowed, so i was hoping i could get a media pass which would allow me to do so. i would also love the opportunity to do an interview, if that is in any way possible? thanks for your time!
