   About Steve Herberman

"Steve Herberman exhibits a vast harmonic palette involving uncommon stretches on the fretboard along with a real capacity to burn on fluent single note lines... His sheer command of the instrument puts one in mind of such jazz guitar masters as Joe Pass, Joe Diorio, Lenny Breau, and Gene Bertoncini. His nuanced touch, excellent tone, tasteful, even phrasing and fresh writing style, further elevates Herberman far above the pack of other talented Berklee grads...definitely worth checking out for fans of advanced jazz guitar."- Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes (05/07)

On Ideals: "Control is what Steve's talent(s) is all about. And, his devilish take on the classic standard “Will You Still Be Mine” will attest to this! More important is his guitar nuances, his feeling for the song, his overall interpretive cast on the American Songbook, his melodic line, his choice of jazz harmonies. This defines his massive talents. In this extensive CD project, there are an astonishing variety of straight ahead jazz ballads and up tempo song choices, delivered with immense sophistication. The power, quantity, and quality of Steve's effort here puts him in the category of those jazz players that one can only aspire to." George W Carroll, The Musicians' Ombudsman (11/08)

"(Herberman's) improvised lines roll out with subtle diversity in phrasing and above all, dynamic contract. His accompaniment (both of himself and his bandmates) is complimentary, exacting, and always stylish...Herberman continues to be one of the finest guitarists of his generation, and "Ideals" slots into an already notable, and hopefully long, celebrated discography". -Dave Major, All About Jazz 10/08

"Achieving a fresh and distinctive voice with guitar trio is no easy task but Steve Herberman, with Drew Gress and Mark Ferber, has done just that with the vibrant sounds on "Action:Reaction". -All About Jazz

"Each one of Steve's compositions has a mind of its own; all of this a major achievement for an album of original music. Steve's improvising is uniquely fresh with melodic ideas that twist and turn and perk your interest..." - Gene Bertoncini

Action:Reaction was listed among the top 45 jazz CD's of 2007 in Jazz Improv magazine.

About me: I'm a graduate of Berklee College Of Music ('88) Since then I've spent the last 18 years playing, writing and teaching. I've taught at Towson University (near Baltimore) since 1999 as adjunct jazz faculty and have done workshops at places like James Madison University, Duquesne University and Virginia Commonwealth University. I've written instructional material for Downbeat magazine as well as an ongoing column for Modern Guitars.com. I've also written many articles for Mel Bay's Guitar Sessions. I enjoy teaching a monthly online masterclass for www.mikesmasterclasses.com

I've had the pleasure of playing music with some legendary musicians like Jim Hall, Buster Williams, Steve LaSpina, Larry Willis, Gary Bartz, Jim Snidero and many others, and some of the top DC area players.

I've recorded and produced three cd's: Thoughtlines 2001, Action:Reaction 2006 and Ideals 2008.

CD's can be purchased from my website: www.steveherberman.com, cdbaby and digitally on I-Tunes, Emusic and Rhapsody.

Steve, thanks for adding me to your friends, and thanks for your kind words. I certainly enjoyed listening to your music. I hear in you a deep appreciation for really developing ideas in your solos. I suspect that you have a very deep affection for Jim Hall's playing, as do I. If you get down to Texas, give me a shout.

Sincerely,
Dave Lincoln
