About me: A discovery of music and the joy of vinyl from an early age thanks largely to my big bro! (Cheers SKB!), regularly hi-Jacking my old man’s prized Thorens turntable! My school to college years introduced me to: Hip Hop; 80’s Soul; Rare-Groove; Early House and Acid Jazz – with my playlist ranging from ‘Parliament’ to ‘Big Audio Dynamite’ and ‘Galliano’ to ‘Shut up and Dance’ and pretty much anything on the ‘Rebirth of Cool’ compilation series and the ‘Talkin Loud’ label. In 1988 I joined forces with two school friends under the collective name of ‘The 3 Beats’ – vibe controllers: AD; Mole (aka Toast) and Jammin’ (aka Steve Jalapeno)… playing the usual mates and friends of friends parties etc… then in 1990, as ‘The 3 Beats’ we made our radio debut for Paradise City Radio (PCR), a Jamaican run pirate radio station in Bradford (Love and Respect to: Pikey D; Red Dred; Fresh ‘n’ Ruthless and Soul Master Hazzy!) – playing the 'Apres Club Session', 3-6am each and ever Friday night/Saturday morning (till the fuzz shut us down! Old Bill Scarper! Luckily for us we didn’t loose our records!) droppin’ an eclectic mix of: Soul; Acid Jazz; Funk; Rare-Groove; Hip-Hop; House and Detroit Techno! The success of the radio show brought with it a series of guest spots in and around the Bradford and Leeds areas. A thriving underground club scene meant many a night at: New Edition; The Gallery; Back to Basics; Up Yer Ronson; The Cooker; The Warehouse (numerous club nights!). Then h’way to Newcastle to embark on my love of Graphic Communications and some great nights… with Fusion an awesome mix of Acid Jazz, Funk, Rare-Groove and cavorting! I managed to graduate with flying colours as well! Post College moved to Edinburgh then another job offer prompted a move back to England and relocated over to Preston that was 1994 and have been here ever since! Preston’s early days offered some quality nights: Cheeky Monkeys providing some of the finest house music around (a true Friday night mash up in the dirty sweat box on Cannon Street); the back room at Feel; in fact some great nights in 42nd Street with Nathan’s night (sorry mate forgotten the name of it!) and The Outbreak Collective etc… A quality weekend clubbing also meant a drive to Manchester: Hacienda; Electric Chair; Friends and Family; a drive over to Sheffield for Love to Be; Gatecrasher and Bed; a stop over in Stone and taxi to the Cannel Club in Wolverhampton; plus monthly trips darn south to London: Rotation, Camouflage, Ministry of Sound, Blue Note and Fabric! Changing times over a decade of awesome partying later and whilst clubbing in Manchester some three years plus ago, we decided that it was about time that Preston had an alternative night which catered for how we were livin’ and Jellybean (2003 and onwards) was born! On the August Bank Holiday 2003 the first Jellybean event was held at The Hog's Head, Preston – concept became reality... with early resident DJs: Dan Daiquiri; Juice Pear and myself mixing together on a glorious hot summer's day a free BBQ with a special blend of Soulful House, Rare-Groove, Disco-Funk and Breaks – keeping everyone groovin’ from mid-afternoon till way past the kid's bedtime... a series of events followed over the following 18 months with resident and guest DJs (Love and Respect to: SKB, Posh and Batan) and percussionists, transforming the venue with banners, drapes, smoke machines and projections… DJing on Unity FM in 2004, brought back memories of the early PCR days, and gave me the chance to showcase what I was about in terms of music variety and underground choice cutz… We’ll house you! (2005 and onwards) following the success of the Jellybean events we moved over to the newly built venue ’53 Degrees’ and celebrated our soulful housewarming with Sole Channel’s supremo, Alix Alvarez (NYC)… Another 18 months further on and the Jellybean night continues to embrace quality underground dance music and features guest DJs from the deep and soulful global house scene… A night truly all about great music, great people and great times… Tales of the funk! (2007 and onwards) Joining forces with the Sunday Soul Collective brings with it the concept of Supafly a strictly ‘non-house’ night, bringing back the funk-fuelled classics that inspired me in the first instance! With a combined DJ and vinyl junkie collective of 100+ years, we’re making Friday’s funky once more – Supafly featuring: Chris Da Mentalist; Kid Blast; Miz Diz; Simba; Matter; Steve Jalapeno and Nathan ‘The Hitman’ Hearn
