Bio
Steve Kozak was born in Vancouver BC Canada and has been a mainstay on the western Canadian Blues scene since the mid-eighties. Backed by some of Vancouver's top musicians Steve has built a reputation as one of Canada's premier Blues acts. In a August 2012 article Roger Levesque, of The Edmonton Journal said, "The guitarist-singer/songwriter is a big fan of the American west-coast sound, swing and jump styles. Listen to his upbeat tunes and you'll come away with a sunnier mood." Throughout his career Steve has shared the stage, and played with many Blues greats including; Pee Wee Crayton, James Harman, Big Joe Duskin, Sonny Rhodes, Eddie 'The Chief' Clearwater, Duke Robillard, Rod Piazza, Rick Estrin, Mark Hummel, Lee Oskar, Nick Curran, Big Joe Louis, Mitch Woods, Tom Holland, Kenny Blues Boss Wayne, Miss Robin Banks, and Rockabilly guitar legend Evan Johns. Known for his tireless efforts promoting Blues and Roots music on the West Coast Steve has also worked as the artistic director and talent purchaser for the 2011 and 2012 Powell River Blues Festival. Recent career highlights include performances at the 2012 Edmonton International Blues Festival, where he and the band were held over by request to perform at the Edmonton Blues Festival volunteer dance, shows at the 2011 and 2012 Powell River Blues Festival, the 2012 Great Canadian Bike Rally in Merritt BC, the 2011 Nanaimo Blues Festival, The 2011 Rare Earth music Festival at Silver Star Resort in Vernon BC. The 2010 Labatt Blues Festival in Edmonton Alberta with James Harman, 2010 Pender Harbour Blues Festival with James Harman, the Gastown Blues & Chili Festival in Vancouver BC and the 2009 Nanaimo Blues Festival. Steve and his Westcoast All-Stars have worked as the backing band at festivals and club dates in western Canada supporting international recording artists such as James Harman, Mitch Woods, Big Joe Louis, 'The Shuffle King' Tom Holland, and Miss Robin Banks. He has also performed shows in Vancouver with Nick Curran and the Low-Lifes, Rick Estrin and the NightCats, Maria Muldaur, The Lee Boys and 'Super Harp' James Cotton. Steve Kozak has just released a new independent CD in August of 2012 titled 'Lookin' at Lucky' featuring special guest James Harman. Page 2 'Lookin' at Lucky' is the fourth and most highly anticipated release by Steve Kozak. As the title track suggests, Kozak offers up more upbeat original tunes that express his gratitude and joy for living after thriving and surviving a life that has taken a few hard turns along the way. Real honest Blues here with very few gimmicks, presented to the listener in a way that reflects the sound of the band as you would hear in a live performance. The CD has been receiving rave reviews since its release in August of 2012. Holger Petersen host of CBC Radio's Saturday Night Blues and head of Stony Plain Records says "Really been enjoying 'Lookin' At Lucky'. Well done all round." John Vermilyea of Blues Underground Network says, "Steve Kozak's style of music is a great mix of Swingin', Jumpin', Rockin' Blues, which have no problem taking one back to the great music in those styles from the 50's, especially the great sound Steve presents with his Guitar." "Lookin' at Lucky" gets my highest rating of 5*****. A really fun album to listen to…" More touring is on the horizon for Steve and his band in 2013. Be sure to catch Steve Kozak and his WestCoast All-Stars at a live music venue near you! -

Vancouver Bluesman Steve Kozak delivers the real goods playing red hot swingin' jump Blues, deep Texas style shuffles and hard rockin' roots music. What you will get from Steve and his band is infectious, soulful and honest, 'authentic working mans music'. Tom Harrison of the Vancouver Province calls it "Blues that can put a smile on your face". The perfect prescription for folks who love to party and dance all night long! .. In the eight or so decades that the Blues have been around, luck, or more specifically, good luck is a theme that has rarely been addressed. The latest offering from Vancouver-based Blues musician Steve Kozak, touches upon that very theme. The title track, " Lookin' at Lucky ", is an autobiographical track that features Kozak's perspective on life, love, the quintessential bluesman passion for bettin' on the ponies and even beating the devil himself at his own game. The jazz-flavoured tune featuring licks reminiscent of Herb Ellis, is a testament to the courtship of lady luck tempered by deep-seated roots in traditional Blues. Steve Kozak has teamed up with Alabama- born blues legend, James Harman to produce this album, featuring Harman playing harp on several tracks. The collaboration has resulted in a truly organic approach that eschews tired Blues clichés and takes the listener on a musical journey that goes to Chicago, Kansas City, West Texas and backwoods Louisiana. Kozak and Harman have captured the essence of this journey on track three, a Sonny Boy Williamson classic. This fresh spin of "Your Funeral, My Trial" stays with the original intent of the song including the guitar's sense of urgency, but infuses a tasty up-tempo groove. Steve Kozak's self-penned, "Come to Me", drives right along with a decidedly Gospel feel and back-beat. Dave Webb's excellent Hammond B-3 accompaniment and the knock-out background vocals of Catherine St. Germain and Kelly Brock lend even more authenticity and will make you a true believer. Track 7, a Little Walter classic, showcases Steve Kozak's Blues acumen and James Harman's absolute mastery of the harp. This track leaves no doubt as to the duo's intrinsic connection to the genre and as well as the sincerity and commitment demonstrated not only by Kozak and Harman, but the entire ensemble as well. The album comes to a close with a cover from one of the truly unsung heroes of the Blues, Lazy Lester. The significance was not lost on Kozak. He has managed to capture the essence of this raucous Blues anthem without making it into a hollow tribute. The raw edge of the guitar riff and Harman's wailing understated harp takes one in back in time. As the last track came to a close, I was left with the feeling that I had just came home from one of those proverbial Blues parties. This latest release from Steve Kozak does indeed have an overall "Blues party" feel to it, with a counterpoint of tradition and contemporary Blues. Give "Lookin' at Lucky "a listen and you might feel lucky, I know I did, and now, I have this uncontrollable urge to go to the track and bet on some horses. Serge Lotosky Vancouver,BC .. I was born in Vancouver B.C. Canada in 1956 and I have been a part of Vancouver's Blues scene for over twenty years.
I began playing guitar and singing at age sixteen and took to the Blues like a duck to water. My passion for the Blues flourished after meeting, and hanging out for a few nights, with the legendary Muddy Waters here in Vancouver back in May of 1977. Muddy encouraged me and set me straight on a few things. After that, I was ‘on a mission’ -- my musical future was sealed.
I first started playing around Vancouver during the mid eighties in a band called Bad Habits. During those early years I gained some good experience, and ‘paid my dues’ at the renowned Yale Hotel’s Saturday Blues jam. In 1991 I won the ‘Battle of The Blues Guitars’ at The Yale’s Saturday Jam.
Since then I have worked with some great Blues bands from the Vancouver area including Juno winner Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne, the Juno nominated band The Twisters, The West Coast Five, and VP and the Hammerheads.
Over the years I have had the good fortune to share the stage with and play along side many Blues greats including my good friend, the legendary 'Icepick' James Harman; Big Joe Louis from London England; Chicago's own Tom Holland (guitar player for The James Cotton Band); 2006 Juno Award winner Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne; the late, great Pee Wee Crayton; Cincinnati boogie woogie piano man Big Joe Duskin; Guitar Shorty; Sonny Rhodes; Eddie Clearwater; Lee Oskar; and my pals, Mark Hummel, Rick Estrin (of Little Charlie and the Night Cats), as well as Rockabilly legend and guitar player extraordinaire, Evan Johns.
In 1999 I formed Steve Kozak's Westcoast Blues Revue featuring a solid line up of talented Vancouver Blues musicians who share a keen interest in playing hard hitting authentic Blues.
The WestCoast Blues Revue has gone through a few personnel changes since the beginning and draws from a stable of top notch players. The line-up still changes from time to time depending on who’s available for the gig and what works best for the situation.
My latest CD Hoot ‘N Holler is my second release and my first studio recording featuring almost entirely original material. We recorded the project over two sessions, live off the floor, to get as close to a live performance sound as we could with a minimum of overdubs and added effects.
“Everybody Hoot ‘N Holler and have yourself a real good time!”

*Jerry Hall top notch record producer and owner, president & CEO of The Pacific Blues Recording Company says: “Steve's new release comes after a long absence due to illness, "Hoot 'n Holler" is a strong return to form featuring some of Western Canada's best players and 10 originals of the 13 songs on the CD. Recorded live in-studio for a natural performance feel and produced by Jack Lavin, Steve has returned strong as ever.”

BILLY F. GIBBONS AND STEVE KOZAK NOV. 22/09
HOOT 'N HOLLER Liner Notes:
Following his brush with mortality in early 2006, Steve and his family were witness to the generosity of the open-hearted Vancouver Blues community during an August 2006 benefit at The Yale. This outpouring of support and affection inspired him to transform his own personal blues into a hard-working, 13 song expression of gratitude.
From the title track that springs to life with a ‘just happy to still be here’ feel, to Steve’s tribute to wife Sue on ‘Girl Of My Dreams’, it’s an infectious, hand-crafted swinging blues that makes you want more. Embracing his latest favourite saying “…there’s no fun like the fun we’re having now…” Steve’s distinctive guitar style has a new lively lilt – just check his solo work on the instrumental ‘Rollin’ With Brother D’.
But all this couldn’t have happened without helping hands along the way. Recorded live off the floor in two days, thanks go out to a stable of great players and long-time musical friends noted here. Special thanks go to engineer/mixer Ken Burke of Burkeville Sound and long-time friend, co-writer and producer Jack Lavin who also took the time to sit in with Steve on their roots feel collaboration ‘It Didn’t Happen That Way’ featuring Jack on the harp.
This album is a musical story about hard work, survival and perseverance. And if there’s such a thing as the blues with a happy ending Steve has captured it here for all of us to ‘Hoot ‘N Holler’ about and be grateful for.
