Steven Lugerner was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area in a multicultural, artistically nurturing family. He began his early musical studies "attempting" to play the trumpet - a painful experience for both student and family audience. Thankfully, he followed the suggestion of his music teacher and switched to lessons on the clarinet. He soon discovered his niche in the world of woodwind instruments.
His elementary school music studies coupled with involvement in youth orchestra allowed him to refine his studies on the clarinet and additionally inspired his interest and concentration to the oboe, an instrument no fifth grader dared to take up. During his middle school and high school years, Lugerner performed on both the clarinet and oboe in school and college-level bands, as well as professional pit orchestras. It was in mid-high school that he began a dedicated study of saxophone and the exploration of jazz and improvised music. This was a natural reconnection to the sounds of his childhood years characterized by the household music of Paul Desmond, Stan Getz, Milt Jackson and Steely Dan.
A dedication and pursuit of higher musical study has been the lure for Lugerner’s relocation to New York City. Lugerner has since established himself as a bi-coastal musician performing in such venues as The Herbst Theatre (SFJAZZ Festival), The Red Poppy Art House, The Jazzschool, The San Jose Jazz Festival in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as New York City venues: Sweet Rhythm, Smalls Jazz Club, Dizzy's Coca-Cola Club and Carnegie Hall. Travel and performance on both the east and west coasts have fostered contacts, study and collaboration with such artist as: SFJAZZ Collective member Miguel Zenon; trumpeter Ralph Alessi; flutist/composer Jamie Baum; trumpeter Darren Johnston; saxophonist Dayna Stephens; pianist Myra Melford; woodwind doubler Charles Pillow; saxophonist Chris Cheek; drum legend Charli Percip; Blue Note recording artist Jason Moran; Grammy nominated pianist Fred Hersch and soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom.
Reflecting the cultural diversity and values of his Bay Area roots, Lugerner's music encompasses the richness of diversity. He is a skilled and diversified woodwind doubler on saxophone, bass clarinet, clarinet, oboe, english horn and flute. Lugerner creates a singular musical experience that is reflected in any one of his projects. By combining his early training and affection for classical music with his devotion to improvised music and jazz, Lugerner succeeds in creating music that appeals to all audiences.

man. I'd love to! We'll see how things go. California is really nice but I could use a little NY ass kicking to bust my chops. I miss you guys out in new york and can't wait to see you soon. I'm writing some new material that might work for the chives and might work for a larger ensemble. Either way, I'm looking forward to more collaboration!
Hey thanks for the kind words man. I've been practicing a lot. Yea dude for sure. Maybe you can play some Saturdays at B Street with me. I have a piano trio going on with two kids from SF Jazz (I got into to the band this here!) so maybe you could play with us? That would be tight if you're down. Hit me up when you're back.
