My influences are far reaching.
As a writer I'm influenced by Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Hank Williams, John Prine, Tom Waits, Ray Davies, Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, Duke Ellington, Holland Dozier Holland, Carole King, Burt Bacharac, James P. Johnson, Irving Berlin, Joni Mitchell, Harry Warren, Lieber and Stoller, Ron Sexsmith, Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Steve Cropper, Nankar Phelge, Robert Johnson, Merle Travis, Gordon Lightfoot, Floyd Tillman, and many others. I also love good bad songs.
My favourite singers, whom I would like to sound like are the ones who interpret songs well, with a touch of personality and soul. I really dig Elvis, John Lennon, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams, Chet Baker, George Jones, Ray Charles, Toots Hibbert, Nat King Cole, Elmore James, B.B. King, Mahalia Jackson, Joni Mitchell, Dusty Springfield, Bob Dylan, Earl King. I don't really care for that grunge yargel.
As a guitarist, I have been directly influenced by players like Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, Matt "Guitar" Murphey and Amos Garrett. I have also absorbed the styles of Scotty Moore, Merle Travis, Mark Knopfler, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Herb Ellis, James Burton, Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson, Ry Cooder, Albert King, Elmore James and many others. Lately I've been digging Hawaiian slack-key guitar, especially Keola Beamer.

Checking in to see if you are gigging anywhere over the Holidays or New Years. I'll be in Alberta for 10 days kicking around and would love to catch some great music. sj
Hi Steve,
just wanted to say hello to you. I met you years ago around the time that you wrote 'Canadian man'. I too know Kit and Lindsay Ell and hope that the show at the Jub went well for you all last week. Sorry I missed it. I'm sure we'll meet again sometime soon. Come by to check out my page and music sometime. Cheers and take care,
Great to share the stage with ya' at Alberta Sessions! Good times indeed.
Still laughing about the comment on Friday about there being no point in naming instrumentals and/or cats.
I was thrilled to find you on here! Hey, put some tunes up! :) It's been a long time since I've seen you, I hope to get out to a show sometime soon. Thanks for the add.
