   About Steve Smith
Steve Smith has been performing for nearly thirty years in about as many types of musical situations as one can imagine. He has appeared as a solo artist, bandleader, an in-demand sideman and session player and producer in traditional bluegrass (his first love), old-time, Celtic, new acoustic jazz and chamber music. His solo shows incorporate original vocal and instrumental works and include unique arrangements of traditional and modern tunes from delicate fingerstyle to hard driving rhythms on mandolin, guitar, mandola and vocals.

Smith has been involved in a number of theatrical productions including composing the score for the Sam Sheppard play Curse of the Starving Class. He honed his skills with a stint in music school studying 20th century composition and theory; most recently his music was used in the PBS film The Bataan Death March, a New Mexico Story and Portraits of the Southwest.

Most recently Steve appeared on the latest release by guitarist extraordinaire Jim Hurst, "A Box of Chocolates" and produced the CD Bungalow by singer songwriter Bob Einweck, and the long awaited CD from Hard Road "Only So Fast".

In addition to a regular solo touring schedule which has taken him from Florida to Alaska, the Caribbean to Europe, Smith tours with his group Steve Smith and Hard Road, The Alan Munde Gazette, and maintains a busy teaching and workshop schedule including ten years as mandolin instructor at Camp Bluegrass (www.campbluegrass.com), the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, and the California Coast Music Camp along with a broad palette of recordings on mandolin, mandola, mandocello and guitar.

Steve currently performs solo or with a number of different groups:

Steve Smith & Hard Road

Alan Munde Gazette

Steve Smith Trio

The Steve Smith Quintet, his instrumental group (original and jazz standards)

When our bodies waltz with the sun,
our arms drape over its gleaming
corona, and we press into each other’s
ribs and step forward as one.

Some afternoons, late, when the sky
blazes a torrid pink, center
of sizzling steak and streaks of red
melon, we pack our chests with ice
to contain wild fires.

Dance is an argument between tree
and sky. Our sky is never sunless
and our sun inhabits all our prayers
for rain. Our stomping feet must
shake droplets from low-lying branches
of cloud.

Adobe jaws harden speech into law:
Wade in our river, dance
with our sun, evening is shade enough
for burning eyes.

from “The Sun Waltz” WC
It won't be long before summer arrives. Enjoy.
