Stian Westerhus plays guitar, lives in Norway, and plays in too many constelations.
“The sense of menace is generated with huge energy by the belligerently brilliant Norwegian guitarist Westerhus who coaxes a plethora of tortured sounds from his axe, bowed notes elongating into harmonic dismemberment of epic proportions. (…) This is heady, sometimes heavy, otherworldly stuff, fuelled by jazz but never hindered by it. Welcome to the new century of improvised music." - JazzWise Magazine
He has played with amongst others (in no particular order):
Arve Henriksen, Lasse Marhaug, Øystein Moen, Gard Nilssen, David Stackenäs, Martin Küchen, Joe Williamson, Terje Isungset, Michael Francis Duch, Trondheim Soloists, Trondheim Voices, Anita Kaasbøll, Martin Langli, Dag Erik Knedal Andersen, Ola Høyer, Paal Nilssen-Love, Kjetil Møster, Sten-Ove Toft, Matthew Bourne, James Allsopp, Tom Arthurs, Tim Giles, Steve Davis, Tor Haugerud, Eldbjørg Raknes, Nils Olav Johansen, Maria Kannegaard, Eirik Hegdal, Irjital Ensemble, Rhodri Davies, Kenneth Kapstad, Philip Hochstrate, Ben Reynolds, Espen Reinertsen, Eivind Lønning, Stina Moltu, Kyrre Laastad, EIKO, Intransit Dance Company, Jaga Jazzist, Sidsel Endresen, Crimetime Orchestra, Trondheim Sinfonietta and many more...
Stian Westerhus also composes and performs music for modern dance, has uneducated views on choreography and does occasional mixing and producing of records.
My pleasure. Jaga Jazzist is full of some of the most talented musicians in this decade or any other, I think. Everyone that has done their own side project has attacked their albums with an equal amount of ferocious talent. You guys don't put anything out just for sales, that's for sure. Wish the USA was different. I'm surrounded by idiots and capitalists. I was really impressed to read (on the JJ home page) that you just decided to pick up the guitar and start experimenting. That's awesome. Keep up the good work.
