Born and raised in Durham North Carolina, Jon Stickley got his musical start singing in Church choir. Influenced by bands such as NOFX and Nirvana, he deviated into the punk and rock scene during his teens developing a band mentality that would aid his musical developement in years to come. His band Strunken White made a mark on the Chapel Hill Indie rock scene.
Jon moved to Raleigh to attend North Carolina University. He soon had a degree in Park Management. During these years his interest in bluegrass came to a head. Drawing inspiration from bluegrass greats such as Tony Rice, Tim O'Brien, and David Grisman, Jon began playing bluegrass guitar and mandolin with his brother Jeff and was soon noticed by the local bluegrass Big Fat Gap. Jon went through bluegrass undergrad with the likes of Andy Thorn, Miles Andrews, and Bobby Britt.
After graduating Jon moved to Durango CO and played with the band Broke Mountain.
It wasn't long before Jon was noticed and taken on by the nationally touring band, the Biscuit Burners. Jon played mandolin with the Biscuit Burners for a year before leaving with lead singer and banjo player Shannon Whitworth in 2006.
You can now catch Jon playing lead guitar and singing harmony vocals in the Shannon Whitworth Band. Aside from backing Shannon, Jon plays an annual tour with John Frazier (Hit and Run), Travis Book (Imfamous String Dusters), Andy Thorn (Larry Keel), under the band name the Colorado Playboys. He also teaches Mandolin/banjo/guitar in the Asheville area.

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?
Great to see you guys out west, Stick! Strawberry was awesome, and I hope you get back here someday. Enjoy the Station Inn, I know you are on sacred ground there! Cheers, Phil

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
Are you skipping out of playing at Duckpond this year? I don't see you scheduled with Shannon on June 16th. What's up with that? I'll leave you with something really cool from one of our favorite fiddle players.....Here's Megan with Sam Quinn as captured by a really talented filmmaker in Greensboro who documents musicians in his kitchen.
