"This is their own music.....not Stones covers, and it's terrific!
1) Outsider - The beginning is very interesting. I don't know what's being done there, instrumentally, but very different. Lyrically, using the metaphor of gambling...."What are the odds against losing my way" and "Paint up your lips, kick off your shoes, I need no luck when I'm singing the blues" are amongst my favourite lines. The vocals are great, and the guitar is magic. The beat, especially at the end is awesome, and all in all it's a great rocker.
2) White Magic - Very upbeat....Ian's voice is in good form....a great dance number...it rocks. Love the guitar solo. "It's all comin' down to me, I'm white magic you see, and I'm gonna take you woman....can't you see."
3) I'm So Lonely - A mid-tempo number....that great English accent comes out here The guitar adds to the effect of the title....I'm So Lonely. My only criticism here....just a tiny one...I think the vocals could have had a bit more emotion....I wasn't quite convinced of the singers loneliness. "I'm tired and lonely, I'm holding on. The rain is falling on my weary song." Ok....after just really listening to the lyrics, I take back my criticism. I now see it this way...he's so lonely, and in such despair that he's emotionally drained.....all feeling is stifled.
4) Red Clouds - The beginning already catches your interest....great guitar, and a mysterious sound. Great vocals...a longing for his lover who's obviously not present. Love it! "People stop and stare now, I've one thing on my mind. I'm coming home to you child, this world is too unkind."
5) Unconditional Surrender - My personal favorite! Very sensual beat, and vocals.....maybe more of a chick song, but guys....play it for your woman and you might expect miraculous things. OMG that beat is very stirring! Good job.....I know this one off by heart! "It seems to me that you've laid down your terms. There's no way we can make it if I don't learn. You've got your ideas and baby I've got mine. It's so hard to say it's been a waste of time." Killer lyrics!
6) Ballad of Joey and Ricky - A story song...very uptempo. Love the horns in there (or is that a synthesizer, lol)....very sexy guitar licks. My fave line is "he had no real future, but then he had no past".
7) Dreams - Ooooh yeah......love that intro...sounds like a dream. Great lyrics, sexy voice.....ok..I'm in love. That's the sexiest guitar I've ever heard. "I know you don't believe that it can be so, for all your dreams to come true at a single go.
8) No One Ever Dies - A whimsical sound...but sad lyrics...."no one every dies of a broken heart."
9) Starring in My Dreams - Very different instrumentally....good beat, love the lyrics and vocals. Mr. X is does a great solo! "You've been starring in my dreams strange as that may seem. Though it's years since we met, I'm thinking of you yet".
10) Finding Out - My 2 favourite! Excellent guitar intro.....very uptempo with a beat that just won't quit. "You always said you were a playgirl with time for parties and reviews. You always thought you’d be a star girl, now you find you're front page news."
11) Office Girls - Slow, sexy start that slowly buillds, almost like lovemaking. "All the guys in the office would love to please her, the boss says don't waste your time, she's just a teaser". I love the way some of the words go "off beat" to give it an extra emphasis.
12) Nobody Knows - Alternates between a heavy rocker and a slower, sexy beat. Excellent guitar. "There was a time before rings and vows and complicity, there was a place before rent and rates and electricity. It's just unfortunate that we were wed, it's just unfortunate the things we said".
13) Read 'Em and Weep - Not sure if it starts with a kind of reggae beat, or some other "tribal" beat. Good vocals, Ian. Stikkyfingers going "political", lol. "She resisted temptation for a week or two, but soon she was helping a political coup."
14) Dark Is The Night - Slow and sexy; bluesy. Kind of a bump and grind type of song. Great instrumental solo. "It's cold in the night the wind whispers still. I wanna make my way back home to you but the road is all uphill". He's definitely yearning.
Good going Ian....this is a CD I would definitely pay good money for...definitely a keeper!"
