Stingfish, a four-piece rock band from Wellington released CD number two on Saturday 5th May 2007 at Valve Bar. The show also doubled as the bands final live outing.
The band’s new CD titled ‘Spy’ features six tracks recorded with well known local live sound mixer Blair Wotton from Tolerant Audio. The six tracks run the gauntlet of the band’s sound from the frenetically paced wall of guitars thriller ‘Spy’ through to the haunting CD closer ‘Dead Weight’, a reflective and airy tale of unexpected death. The lyrical content of the band’s songs is inspired by interactions with an eclectic range of people including taxi drivers, a baker, those dealing with psychosis, and the homeless.
Rising from the ashes of various different bands, Stingfish formed in early 2004 with a determination to create a professional and dynamic sound. Over the last three years the band has played regularly in the Wellington live circuit. In 2005 the band released EP ‘Down on the Street’ recorded with legendary local producer Mike Gibson (whose past work includes the likes of Shihad, Fur Patrol, Letterbox Lambs, and the Phoenix Foundation). In December 2005 the band’s track ‘One Eyed’ was selected for the NZ On Air ‘Off the Record’ initiative and was playlisted on the Rock FM.
CD Reviews for debut Stingfish CD – Down on the Street (2005)
"...an assured EP from a polished act... Opinionated buzzes along in a manner reminiscent of the no-frills post-punk of vintage Husker Du or Guided By Voices. They have the chops (in both the playing and songwriting departments)..." The Package Gig Guide
“Glimpses of Silverchair and even Feeder… strong Shihad feel… extremely polished and I’m sure there’s a lot more to come from this band” Missing Link Magazine
"the sort of rock 'n' roll that makes you want to get up off your lazy ass for fear of letting life pass by for even a second... a sound that finds its feet firmly in the kiwi rock bracket..." Real Groove Magazine
"The debut Stingfish EP showcases the strong songwriting talent of a band so incredibly earnest..." Rip it up Magazine
