Born Samuel Reid on october 4th 1956 in England, Stix Dan was raised in Jamaica,
after contracting poliomyelitis at the age of 6.
He became a rastafarian at the age of 17, joining the Twelve Tribes of Israel organisation.
Working as a taylor he lives in Manchester, since 1987.
Working alongside different sound systems along the years,
he started to perform live with a band in 1997 with the jamaican artist Junior Dan.
He released his first album in 2001 "Traveling Man",
after meeting the french reggae jazz dub band "Faya Dub" and having done many shows with them.
Stix Dan's second album, "Orthodox Love", is produced by David F, a french producer,
working with bands like No Jazz or I Muvrini, and mix Stix's deep roots voice
with different musical flavours, including many differnts guests.
Stix Dan died on July 1st of 2009, Bardar , Ethiopia.
He will always be in our hearts.

De son vrai nom Samuel Reid, Stix Dan d’origine jamaicaine est né le 4 octobre 1956 en Angleterre.
A l'age de six ans, lors d'un séjour en Jamaique, il contracte la poliomyélite.
Il est alors placé par sa famille dans un centre spécialisé ou il rencontre les menbres
du futur groupe "Israel Vibration".
A dix sept ans il adhère aux thèses Rastafariennes et devient membre
de l'organisation des "Douze Tribus d'Israel", dont il est toujours un
membre actif au sein de la communauté Jamaicaine de Manchester.
Exercant le métier de tailleur, Stix Dan vit alternativement en Jamaique et en Angleterre.
Il se fixe définitivement à Manchester en 1987.
Habitué des Sound Systems, il ne commençera à se produire sur scène avec un groupe
qu'en 1997 au coté du chanteur Junior Dan.
Cinq ans après son premier album “Travelling Man”,
Stix Dan, revient avec “In the Streets of Paris”,
disque produit et réalisé par David°f (NoJazz, I Muvrini…).
Démonstration rayonnante du voyage harmonieux
des musiques jamaïcaines avec le son cubain, la soul ou l’electro,
cet album riche en sonorités est truffé de trouvailles rythmiques,
à l’exemple de la chanson “In the Streets of Paris” , où le flow du rappeur Baron
vient clôre une ballade nu-jazz-musette dans la capitale, “in a rub-a-dub way”...
Les amateurs de beats surprenants seront comblés par le détonnant mélange jamaï-cubain
du titre “War”, dans lequel Mangu se prête à un duo avec Stix Dan,
soutenu par les violons charanguesques de Jean-Luc Pino (Malavoi, Ultramarine…).
Si les références rastafaris restent très présentes dans les textes inspirés de Stix Dan,
le funk n’est pourtant jamais bien loin : du groovy “Let’s get it on”,
basé sur un sample de “ Hi Fly”, du jazzman Ben Sidran (sa réaction à l’écoute du titre : “I dig it !”)
au beat hypnotisant de “A long journey”, où les choeurs et claviers de Baco sont dignes de ceux d’un Curtis Mayfield.
D’autres chansons comme le calypso festif “Pray”, le reggae souverain “Hallelu’Jah”
ou encore la tubesque ballade “Lay me down”,
imposent définitivement Stix Dan comme un interprète et songwriter de grande classe.
Stix Dan s'est éteint le 1er Juillet 2009 à Bardar, Ethiopie.
Il restera pour toujours au fond de notre coeur...
