About me:
SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE: IMPULSE DANCE FESTIVAL
Each summer, aTrek offers a summer modern dance intensive for college students and emerging/established professional dance artists. The 2008 Impulse Dance Festival guest artist will be New York-based artist Jon Lehrer, best known for his work with Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago (GJDC) and Mathew Janczewski from Shapiro & Smith Dance and JAZZDANCE!
Offered this year July 14-27 by the aTrek Dance Collective, IMPULSE is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for adults to dance and perform at professional and semi-professional levels without leaving the Midwest.
This year IMPULSE will offer conditioning, intermediate and advanced level ballet, modern and contemporary jazz classes, opportunities to perform and get feedback on choreographed works. The intermediate track is designed for juniors and seniors in highschool preparing to audition for or begin college dance programs. The advanced track is ideal for older college students and grads planning to pursue a professional career and facing lots of auditions or (pre)professional dancers wanting to push their performance skills to the next level.
While IMPULSE doesn't officially start till July, we encourage artists wishing to participate in the Choreography track to start working on pieces now and to let us know about their desire to be a part of the program. A 15% discount on tuition is available for students who register by May 15, and a 10% discount is available for students who register by June 1.
The aTrek Dance Collective is a not for profit organization of St. Louis based dance artists dedicated to the development of local contemporary modern dance programs. We create opportunities for advanced training and development of dance artists and presentation of their work. aTrek offers community based activities including master classes, workshops, school residencies, and performances. We promote the values of artistic expression, physical awareness, and cultural diversity through dance.
COLLECTIVE STRUCTURE:
aTrek is a collective of local dance artists, headed up by Artistic Co-Directors Diana Barrios and Betsy Brandt. Second to producing artworks, our priorities include creating and offering cutting edge educational programing for young people. Our signature program, Moving Through Math is performed throughout St. Louis in schools. This very successful program integrates Math curriculum with movement and dance to help students develop a richer more genuine relationship to the material.
HISTORY:
In 1988, Atrek began as the performing duo of dancers/choreographers Angela Culbertson and Terry Pexton. Born with an uncanny willingness to risk, Artistic Director Angela Culbertson guided the company from its inception until the spring of 2003.
In 2003, Atrek Dance Company evolved into a collaborative group of artists. The Dance Collective presents works choreographed local artists and guest artists specially selected by the collective to represent the collective artistic vision.
