The Stoics have independently recorded and released three Ep’s in the three years they have been together. Their latest Ep , ‘Death Machine’ was recorded in Hobart with Melbourne engineer Rob Long (Faker, Magic Dirt) and mastered at Birdland Studios.
They have supported some of the best bands around across a myriad of genres; The Cat Empire, The New Pornographers (Canada) , The Getaway Plan, Cut Copy, Clare Bowditch.
The five-piece band is currently based in Tasmania and has performed extensively at festivals such as: Falls. MS Fest, Triple J’s AWOL, Festivale, Breath of Life, The Forest Festival.
Their shoulders have grown tired from shrugging in interviews when journalists ask them to describe their style. Comparisons have been drawn to other artists like: The Decemberists, Augie March, The Panics, Gomez; yet perhaps their style is best defined as sounding like The Stoics.Three vocalists combine to powerfully deliver lyrically driven songs.
The band also has two drummers. Whilst one spends most of her time stretching her fingers behind the piano, their live show frequently features explosive and driving dual percussion from the male and female drum team.
Triple J recognised their efforts by awarding them Next Crop (2007) status amongst the nations most promising unsigned artists. Their music has been played and welcomed nationally through Triple J.
Their latest record is the first to feature the bands multi-instrumental capabilities: cello, double bass and violin arrangements further enrich their sound.
When they tour, your town is their favourite town.
The line up: Ciaran van den Berg, lead vocals and guitar. Beau Thomas, drums and vocals. Maria Moles, piano and vocals. Hugh Montgomery, trumpet. Toby Brodel, bass.
