Sounds Like
Stone 588's early raw punk/ death-rock sound with tribal rhythms may remind some of Siouxsie and the Banshees, but Stone 588 members think the similarity stops at the guitar effects. Vocalist Terri recalls, "When we played live, we'd get two comments in this regard..if it was an acoustic show, we would garner "Cocteau Twins " comparisons, and with the full band we'd get remarks such as the one Dave Vanian shouted from the back as we were opening for him, "They're ripping off Siouxsie!" (For the record, Stone 588's guitarist, Dave yelled back, "You're ripping off Elvis!") Reviewers have made favorable comparisions of Terri's operatic soprano to Lisa Girard and Anneli Drecker, while fans of This Ascension, Mors Syphilitica, Mephisto Walz, Die Laughing, Inkubus Sukkubus, and other guitar-based gothic bands will surely appreciate Stone 588.
Formed in 1992 in Fullerton, California by guitarist Dave Rhine
and vocalist Terri Kennedy (who co-owns goth shop Ipso Facto), Stone 588's brooding, intense, tribal
sound has its roots in the early '80's post-punk era of Killing Joke
and Siouxsie and the Banshees, traversing a dimly lit path of rhythmic
darkness. The roster of members has included Eileen Bowe (Dichroic Mirror, Strychnine FX), Tony Sequido, Paul Rocha, Larry Salzman, Romeo Pastanas, Jose Sanchez., Adam Haynes, Phil Hanson, Mike Burton and others.
Comprised of ferocious rhythms and sinuous, liquid guitars awash
with rippling, cavernous sounds emanating from beneath a murky depth, Stone
588's songs explore nocturnal emotions with vocals ranging from sensually
captivating to fiercely chilling. Stone 588 draws their name from the
legend of a Druid's Altar in County Cork, Southern Ireland. Under the
stone circle, the cremated body of an infant, a human sacrifice, was found
concealed in a large urn, whose burial dates back to c588 B.C. Stone 588 has three cd self-releases "Door in the Dragon's Throat" (1995) and "Midnight Claret," (2000) plus three previous cassette-only releases (1993, 1995) now available as the "Eden's Eyes" cd (2007). They have also appeared on cable television, over 21 cd compilations worldwide on Cleopatra, Cargo, Palace of Worms, Projekt, Equinoxe and other labels, and in the independant vampire-themed film, "Circle of Five."
Stone 588 has performed live in support of Shadow Project, Rozz Williams, Human Drama, Eva O., The Last Dance, Astro Vamps, This Ascension, Babyland, Dave Vanian, and others. The band is currently preparing tracks for a new 2008 cd release and performing in the L.A. area. Look for further compilation tracks and dark emanations from Stone 588 soon.
