"If you were to hear this album without the aid of any background information on its origins, your instincts would probably tell you it was 60's-era rock, carefully unearthed from the vaults of an overlooked rock band along the lines of Free or Cream. The fact that it's a new recording is a testament to the precision with which the group crafts not only their songs, but their sound. If you feel like you've exhausted your classic rock options, this is a great place to get a fresh start." cdbaby.com march 2009
STONE AXE - Riders of the Night 7”
Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com)
In between writing songs for future gods, Mos Generator singer/guitarist Tony Reed started up a second project, STONE AXE. Switching from vocals to, uh, everything else (he’s credited with all instruments on this two song 7”, with Dru Brinkerhoff handling vocals), Stone Axe is focused on recreating the classic rock sound of the early ‘70’s. We’re talking about those English bands that staggered out of the pubs and defined a genre by playing from the heart. If Mos Generator’s “Godhand Iommi” is a tribute to the Sabbath guitarist, “Riders of the Night” pays homage to Free. The results are impeccable. Their cover of Cream’s “SWLABR” is faithfully spot-on, which will please you if you’re a fan of the band, I suppose. I can take it or leave it, but “Riders of the Night” is enough to pique my interest in this new project. Fortunately, the two-piece has evolved into a full band, so more music should be on its way.

You may like classic rock, but I bet you don't like it nearly as much as Tony Reed. The Mos Generator frontman's new project, the two man Stone Axe, is essentially a ten song lesson on what The Riff was like when mutton chop'd giants walked the earth.
Highlights? The whole album, really, but here's a handful of examples of how well Stone Axe is dialed into that early '70's rock aesthetic. Opening track “Riders of the Night” takes a page from Free's playbook and lays down a classic heavy blues riff - nothing fancy, but completely in the pocket and strutting along like all it has to worry about is getting to the next good time on time. "There'd Be Days" has the same cheery 'n' bleary pub rock charm of The Faces - for those that like mash-ups of popular songs, it's "Oh La La" meets "Stay With Me." With "Diamonds and Fools," you get AC/DC somewhere between High Voltage, Let There Be Rock, and '74 Jailbreak. And Thin Lizzy fans will find that "Return of the Worm" does Phil Lynott's legacy justice. I could go on, but you get the point.
Wait, I am going to go on. While Reed does an impressive job making it seem like the work of a full band knocking out the songs live in the studio (he's credited with all instruments), Brinkerhoff also deserves praise for his vocals. He falls somewhere between Paul Rodgers and David Corverdale back when he was taking orders from Richie Blackmore. It's a powerful voice that's as soulful as it is gritty. In short, what a classic rock frontman ought to sound like. Check out his performance in “Black Widow” or “The Skylah Rae.”
You like Cream, Free, Thin Lizzy, The Faces, AC/DC, and Deep Purple? Well, I bet you don't like them nearly as much as Stone Axe. Still, that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the hell out of this impressive debut. Highly recommended.
