David Blake, better known to many by his stage name Stones was born July 31st 1988 in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York. An area known as one of the roughest neighborhoods in not only the borough of Brooklyn but also the entire state of New York. Brownsville is known to many across the nation as a breeding ground for drugs, prostitution and statistically high murder rate’s but, for Stones Brownsville is the place he calls “Home”.In one interview Stones described his birth place as “a place you see things you would’ve swore only happened in the movies”. When described by his peers Stones is always depicted as the “laid back” type and it was that characteristic which helped him manage to stay out of a lot of situations he saw first hand. When asked about his “laid back” persona Stones replied, “My dude Smiles always told me I’m like a mystery because of the way I analyze things but let few people get close enough to actually analyze me, I guess that’s because I was taught from a young age how to move militant”.
Rapping was a hobby Stones picked up from watching his cousin Kenyatta Blake aka Buckshot of the highly regarded 90's rap group Black moon and CEO of Duck down records, “I use to just sit down and listen to Wu-Tang all day, especially Meth to study how they would put words together. But Buck let me know it was real because I use to think every one on the television were some kind of super human’s beamed down from the sky [laughs] but, he was someone I actually saw in the flesh often and saw on T.V. too so, I realized it was possible for a regular nigga to make it in the game because before I knew him as Buck I knew him as my cousin Kenyatta.”.Although Stones credits his early development to emcees of hip hop’s “golden age” he quickly developed a style of his own. Stones credits Buckshot for his deep interest in the game and had this to say about him in a recent interview, “...that’s my nigga right there I see him as a older brother, it’s crazy how sometime we don’t speak to each other for a while seeing how he be having a crazy schedule but when we do get up it be like we just spoke yesterday. He let me know what it is and backs me a hundred percent”. “Older brother” is not a exaggeration either considering how Stones and Buckshot do bare a striking resemblance and stones often runs into that question.
In 2006 Stones released his first mixtape entitled, “The new stone age” which was accepted well by critics but, unfortunately did not circulate too far outside of the tri-state area due to lack of promotion. Stones charged the “failure” of his first project to the game but in recent years “The new stone age” has received moderate success with tracks from the mixtape leaking to the internet causing him to re-release it as a digital download in late ‘08 through his myspace page tittled “Tha stone age revisited” . One of his most successful tracks to date is the revamped version of “Get wit it” that features Brownsville legend Smoothe Da Hustler. When asked how the collabo was made possible Stones explained the simple transaction, “Ayo Smoothe is a real nigga, I reached out to him and let him know I was a big fan of his track 'broken language' you know being from Brownsville and all then I asked him if he would mind shooting me a drop. When I got the drop the plan was originally to keep it in the stash with all the other ones ('I got madd drops') but my engineer pieced it together with 'Get wit it' and it was sounding so authentic I was like fuck it let’s release it to the internet". The track has been featured on countless web sites and blogs to date and has also receive moderate radio play in th UK and proves to be one of his most successful tracks to date.
Currently Stones is working on various projects including his first installment to "The Stepping Stone" series mixape. Stones described his forthcoming mixtape as one of his most accomplished projects to date because of all the familiar faces that reached out to lend a helping hand during it's early stages. The mixtape is said to feature well known hip hop acts and will be hosted by a well known mixtape personality. Although he did say the mixtapes arrival has been so delayed because he's been toying with the idea of distribution, Stones was very reluctant to release any further information on the project stating "yo this game is real fickle; one thing I learned is to never put all your eggs in one basket" but latter on he did say "Just wait and see, I got some shit for ya"
