Stoney's Interests
|
| General | Stoney was an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).
Stoney was born June 17th, 1973 at the Portland Zoo.
He was sold to Ken Chisholm May 6th, 1974 when he was less than a year old.
He was then sold to Mike La Torres in April of 1975.
Stoney’s mother was Pet (Pet was born in the wild in Thailand in 1955 and was euthanized at the Portland Zoo on August 8th, 2006. She was 51 years old.) His father was Thonglaw. (Thonglaw was born in the wild in Cambodia in 1947. He died at the Portland zoo on Nov. 25th, 1974 due to a chronic foot problem. He was only 27 years old).
Stoney died Aug.28th, 1995 when he was only 22 years old.
He died as a result of an injury that occurred while he was performing in the “Winds of the Gods” show in the “Pharaoh’s Dinner Theater” at the Luxor in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Stoney is buried at the Craig Road Pet Cemetery in Las Vegas, Nevada.
His grave marker is very plain and lacks important information about his life and death (a photo can be seen in the pictures section.)
A group of caring humans (“Stoney’s Voice”) would like to see a more suitable marker in place on his grave, but numerous attempts to rectify this situation have not been successful.
The owners and employees at the cemetery have told all concerned that it’s out of their hands, and it’s up to the owner. Numerous attempts to contact the owner have also been unsuccessful. Offers have also been made to the pet cemetery to purchase the grave site next to Stoney’s so a proper grave marker can be ordered from the cemetery and placed on the empty grave as a memorial to Stoney, and they refused that option as well.

About me:
This MySpace page is dedicated to:
STONEY the elephant.
STONEY died 13 years ago today, on August 28, 1995.
In memory of Stoney, and all of the other performing elephants who have died being slaves to the entertainment industry, this site will be updated regularly with facts about other dead elephants in the hopes that some people who read this page will get educated about the things that go on in circuses and other places which use elephants in their performances. Perhaps by reading the facts, some people might think twice before paying to see elephants perform.
Updates will be made in the “Blog” section.
Photos of the Elephants featured will be in the picture Section.
***We would like to warn you that sometimes the text in our blogs and the photos in our pics may contain graphic material. The death of an Elephant can sometimes be quite cruel. Our goal here is to educate; however some of our material is probably not suitable for children. PLEASE exercise caution when reading our blog and viewing our photos if children are present. Thank you for understanding.***
We may occasionally add an elephant death that was a result of a medical experiment (yes it has happened); or perhaps a death of an elephant in the “name of science” (and sadly yes, that has occurred as well).
I guess the point that we of “Stoney’s Voice” are trying to get across is that Elephants are one of the most precious creatures on the planet. Yet we humans have abused them throughout history. Of course, we know we are powerless to do anything to rectify the abuse that has taken place historically, but we hope that Stoney’s Space will perhaps help other humans to educate themselves about these majestic animals.
If only one person reading this decides to NOT go to a circus, or to NOT pay for an elephant ride at a function, or to NOT take their children to see elephants living in unnatural environments; then all of our hard work has paid off.

Who I'd like to meet:
All elephant lovers and anyone who shares the view that elephants should NOT be used to entertain humans.
Elephants are the passion of “Stoney’s Voice” and we would love to hear from others who share in our passion.
