Martin Luther King Jr. (Civil Rights activist) Martin Luther King Jr. is probably the most well known of the Civil Rights Movement Leaders. As a third generation Baptist pastor he went on to pursue a leadership amongst the NAACP. Among the many events, protests and boycotts he led was the 1956 bus boycott that lasted 382 days during which time he was arrested and his home was bombed. At 35 he was the youngest person to ever receive a Nobel Peace Prize for his activist work in the Civil Rights Movement and turned his earnings over to futher the movement. Standing on the balcony of his motel April 4, 1968, the day before he was to lead a protest march in Memphis, Tennessee he was assassinated. His legacy and dreams live on without him as displayed by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which paved the way for the abolishment of segregation in US schools & public areas.
Barbara Gittings (LGBT activist)
Barbara Gittings was a prominent LGBT activist and helped found some of the first lesbian organizations and got libraries to shelf more books on homosexuality. She was also quite influential in the task to get the American Psychiatric Association to drop homosexuality as a mental illness in 1972. GLAAD named an activist award for her life long struggle and achievements and she will forever be remembered as a pioneered that paved the way for homosexual changes in the world.
Pauline Park (Transgender activist)
Pauline Parker co-founded the Queens Pride House (a center for LGBT communities of Queens). She also co-founded NYAGRA, the first statewide transgender advocacy organization in New York. Park led the campaign for the transgender rights law and served as part of a coalition that aims at enacting the Dignity in All Schools Act for transgenders. She was also the first openly transgendered person to be chosen to be grand marshal of the New York City Pride March.
Susan B. Anthony (Women's Suffrage leader & Abolitionist) In 1851 at a temperance movement rally Susan B. Anthony was refused the right to speak because she was a woman. She organized the Women's National Loyal League which gathered enough petitions to pass the 13th amendment (end slavery). After this victory she worked solely to gain rights for women. She was 1 of the first 15 women to vote in a presidential election and was arrested for doing so. Women's suffrage was not successful at the time of her death but 14 years later the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote was added to the constitution in great part because of her life long commitment to make it happen.
