About me: On Feb. 22, the DTRA announced that Divine Strake was terminated after more than a year battle against it by activists. As happy as I and countless activists are about this, it is NOT over. This profile was formed shortly after I attended the only public hearing against Divine Strake in Salt Lake City on Jan. 24. It was organized by Governor Huntsman and no government officials showed up to hear the public's concerns and objections.
Regardless, activists worked hard, really hard to bring the facts and objections against Divine Strake loud, so loud that just about every local media outlet was covering it. The publics' letters to newspapers overwhelmingly opposed Divine Strake. Channel 4 in Utah took an editorial position as a news station against Divine Strake. Three counties in Utah passed resolutions against Divine Strake. In the last minutes of the struggle, the Utah Legislature passed a resolution against Divine Strake. The mayor, the governor, and Rep. Matheson also became flatly against Divine Strake.
10,000 objections were received by the DTRA regarding their second environmental assessment for Divine Strake that said it was safe.
As media outlets across the nation were waking up to Divine Strake, on Feb. 22, Divine Strake was terminated.
However it is a victory, it is not over.
The program that mothered Divine Strake, ACTD, is not terminated. It still seeks to develop mini-nukes to destroy underground bunkers. If such a weapon was dropped on a Baghdad underground bunker, safe estimates would put the civilian casualty to 10,000. The Pentagon approached Congress for approval to develop mini-nukes for underground targets. Congress (long before the mid-term elections) denied it. And yet, the Pentagon is violating a congressional decision by pursuing ACTD. ACTD is also threatening to violate the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty.
CONTACT your congress representatives and senators. THIS ISN'T AN ISSUE EXCLUSIVE TO UTAH AND NEVADA. This is a change in our nuclear weapon policy for the entire nation and may have international consequences. Most representatives have profiles and e-mails online. Google: [your state] + find + legislature (or senator or representative). It will pull it up every time.
Divine Strake was stopped because of grassroots power. The grassroots made Divine Strake an issue to be debated by the media and politicians. We gathered enough momentum to achieve political and media unity against Divine Strake. And now, we must work to stop the program behind Divine Strake: ACTD.
WE MUST HAMMER hammer the media with letters and phone calls too. Independent, corporate, all media needs to be alerted to these facts.
TALK TO YOUR neighbors and friends about Divine Strake's program: ACTD. BLOG about it. POST about it. TALK to activist organizations about this.
A network of independent activists, Citizens Against Divine Strake, was organized shortly before Divine Strake was terminated. The Stop Divine Strake Coalition was mainly for pre-existing organizations which opposed Divine Strake. CADS will still be fighting to terminated ACTD which mothered Divine Strake. If you are in the state of Utah and Nevada, please contact the Utah Coalition of Activists (newly formed) or if you are committed to go to the Nevada Testing Site if necessary to protest there, go there as well.
