Stop I-69 null Posted at 2:08 AM Jun 21, 2008 view more
About me:
Ground has been broken for the construction of I-69, the NAFTA Superhighway, in southern Indiana. After 18 years of fierce public opposition and intense corporate lobbying, on March 11th, 2008 the construction company Gohmann A&C began using heavy equipment to remove trees on the lots of the six evicted houses within the first 1.77 miles of the proposed route. If completed I-69 will stretch some 2000 miles from the Canadian border to the Mexican border where it will connect with the Atlantic corridor highway of Plan Puebla Panama (PPP).
The cost to complete I-69 in Indiana is huge--$4 billion taxpayer dollars and rising—and the population of the state is overwhelmingly against it. Surveys show 74% of Hoosiers are against the road, 150,000 signatures have been collected on petitions to stop the road and 20,467 out of the 21,873 public comments (94%) to INDOT were opposed to the new terrain I-69 route. In Indiana alone, the highway is slated to displace 450 families and destroy 5,000 acres of farmland, 1,500 acres of forest, and 300 acres of wetlands, devastating the habitats of countless species of animals, many of them already endangered. Although the state's justification for the road is job creation, using INDOT's own numbers, the cost to taxpayers per job created would be $359,375.
NOW IS THE TIME TO STOP THIS MONSTER OF A ROAD!!!

Who I'd like to meet: Anyone who lives on the route and doesn't want to be forced off. Anyone who loves the land and culture of Southern Indiana as it is. Anyone who doesn't want semi-trucks and sprawl invading their communities. Anyone who wants to stem the rising tide of environmental destruction and the increasing exploitation of its human inhabitants. Anyone who struggles to resist the encroachment of governments and corporations into all aspects of daily life.
As a believer in Peak Oil, I cannot understand the desire to build new highways. This anachronism from the Cold War days may very well have a commerce lifespan of around five years before diesel is too expensive to spend on any highway shipping. $4.5/gallon will likely be $6.5/gallon in a very short time. Will they even finish it before then? -- Give me rail, canal, and mag-lev please.- Yet, Follow the Karate Kid finishing move, and add a small Orange Belly-Button to the Campus, and all shall be enlightened.
Indiana DNR Division of Forestry Releases EA, Deadline for comments: July 15, 2008
The Indiana DNR Division of Forestry has released its Environmental Assessment of the timber sale program on Indiana’s State Forests. Entitled Increased Emphasis on Management and Sustainability of Oak-Hickory Communities On the Indiana State Forest System, the DoF proposes to increase logging an additional 2000 acres a year, to double the amount of clear cutting, and to burn thousands of acres of forests.
The justification for this plan is that Oak-Hickory forests are declining, and must be cut down to save them. They claim that the increased logging will be beneficial for endangered and threatened species, even though they do not have the scientific studies to back up this claim.
This is happening even thought the vast majority of the public in Indiana oppose the commercial logging of public lands. Please take a moment to send a comment to the Indiana State Forester.
Send to: forestryinfo@dnr.in.gov
Points to make in your comments:
The Indiana State Forests were created for a multiple of uses, yet the IDNR aims to manage the State Forests primarily to grow oak trees, not for wildlife habitat or recreation. This violates the spirit of the law.
The IDNR should not be exempt from the Indiana Environmental Policy Act.
This action proposed in this Environmental Assessment should require an Environmental Impact Statement.
Clearcutting and burning are not proven methods of regenerating oak trees.
Burning forests is a dangerous technique that endangers public health and wildlife.
The IDNR is not complying with the Indiana Endangered Species Act.
The IDNR is not adequately protecting habitat for the endangered Indiana Bat.
The IDNR fails to consider the impact or management of invasive species.

We will meet again to plan a long walk/march along the I-69 route on Tuesday, May 27 (the Tuesday after Memorial Day). The meeting will go from 5:15-6:30 at Monroe County library room 1C. We have to finish at 6:30 due to room availability, but we could move over to, say, Soma, if we need more time together.
If you'd like notes (1 page) from the last planning meeting (May 15), I can send them to you - message me with your email address.
Interstate 69 Legislation in Kentucky Reported by: Web Producer
Friday, May 2, 2008 @05:47pm CST
President Bush is expected to sign legislation approved by the house this week. It's legislation designating the Pennyrile Parkway and portions of the Western Kentucky Parkway as Interstate 69. It will open the door for federal funding for upgrades to the Pennyrile from Henderson to the Western Kentucky Parkway and then west to Eddyville. It is expected to cost about $2 million per mile to bring the highway up to interstate standards. We're told to look for signs go up in about six weeks.

David Rovics has been called the musical voice of the progressive movement in the US. Amy Goodman has called him "the musical version of Democracy Now!" Since the mid-90's Rovics has spent most of his time on the road, playing hundreds of shows every year throughout North America, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Japan. He and his songs have been featured on national radio programs in the US, Canada, Britain, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Denmark and elsewhere. He has shared the stage regularly with leading intellectuals (Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn), activists (Medea Benjamin, Ralph Nader), politicians (Dennis Kucinich, George Galloway), musicians (Billy Bragg, the Indigo Girls), and celebrities (Martin Sheen, Susan Sarandon). He has performed at dozens of massive rallies throughout North America and Europe and at thousands of conferences, college campuses and folk clubs throughout the world. He has loads of MP3's available for free download on his website, www. davidrovics. com, along with CDs, links, etc. More importantly, he's really good. He will make you laugh, he will make you cry, and he will make the revolution irresistible.
Did you know that the West County Energy Center, a 3800 Megawatt Gas/Diesel power plant (it will be the third largest in the U.S.) is currently under the beginning phase of construction in the Everglades in Palm Beach County? That’s right, it will be built less than 1000 feet from the Arthur R. Marshal Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, home to approx. 30 threatened and endangered species. The gas pipeline that is also being built to feed the plant will run through and disrupt dozens of wetland areas.
That’s right, that’s what I’m up to, but don’t worry. Its just the Everglades, its not like it’s the only ecosystem of its kind, oh, wait, I guess it is. Well, that doesn’t matter because I’m getting rich. Ha ha ha. And you can’t do anything about it. So go ahead, tell your friends about this, cause they can’t do anything either.
Thanks for listening to our tunes and checking us out. We're about done with the album so keep in touch. Let us know if we can help in any way, benefit shows, etc.
