Stopping on Green is an alternative rock band from Raleigh, NC, whose
songs span a variety of genres from slow blues/rock to power pop to
hard-hitting instrumentals. The band’s sound is a unique combination of
elaborate guitar riffs, fast-paced drumming, mellow bass lines and deep
powerful vocals. They take filet of music, mix in a dash of Hum and
Weezer, a teaspoon of Hendrix, a pinch of Vai, a quarter cup of Led
Zeppelin, marinade it overnight in Radiohead juice, flatten it with the
rolling stones, then sauté it in a generous amount of everything that
rocks, and then, to quote Emeril Lugasi, "Bamm." So how did these
young, fresh-faced punks get together?
Way back in the fall of 2000, Jesse Blair, Chris Church, and Brandon
Rollyson just started playing a little bit of this and that on some common
household appliances. They later decided that musical instruments might
just be the things they needed. The sounds they were making had led to
them to one thing. They became a band and they called themselves
Stopping on Green.... and it was good.
Shortly thereafter, Rollyson got lost in a Wal-Mart parking lot, leaving a
void in the magical sounds of which he had been a part. Meanwhile Matt
Sargent, an aspiring badass drummer, was living amongst the animals,
trying to find a small niche he could call home. He met up with Chris
and Jesse and discovered there was a place for him behind some wooden
toms, a double kick bass and a snare. The three of them went on to
make such wonderful music.
After a few months of playing, the trio felt like something was missing.
They weren't sure just what. That night each of them had a dream that
so vivid, so real, it forever burned an image in their mind's eye. This
image lasted till the next day, when each revealed and attempted to
describe it. A dancing leprechaun singing and playing their songs. No
one word could describe the moment when each discovered they had all
had the same dream. But what did it mean. Was there something
tainting their box of lucky charms, or was there more? While checking
out a web site that covered the "local scene,” they came across one of
those "punch the monkey" ads. Chris immediately punched the hell out
of that pesky monkey, then realized it was a gimmick and proceeded to
close the window. When he did he came across an ad from some
distraught fellow sounding off how he couldn't find people to make
meaningful music with. Jesse decided to respond and invite Rich to come
show off what little talent he may have. When he showed up to the
audition, Rich strongly resembled a leprechaun. And he could indeed
sing. The dream had become a reality.
Stopping on Green took their mix of musical emotions to the stage.
Having made a big impression on students of NC State during a
series of campus music festivals, the band shared their musical talents with local clubs in the area. They took a long hiatus in 2003, reunited for a weekend in 2008, and the future remains to be seen.
