Stop Sharpening Your Knives is a loose affiliation of poets, artists and musicians who put on readings and gigs in Norwich and London. They publish the S/S/Y/K series of poetry and illustration anthologies.
S/S/Y/K started life in 2005, when Sam Riviere and Jack Underwood put together S/S/Y/K (1), a collection of eight young poets who met in Norwich. This happened because the Art School ran out of money to produce a poetry anthology of its students.
Since then they have organised two fringe events at the Wells Poetry Festival, impromptu soapbox readings at private views, and appeared at such prestigious events as the Troubadour readings, the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival, and London Wordfest, as well as numerous gigs and poetry nights.
In 2007 S/S/Y/K (2) came out. An altogether bulkier and glossier production it features a foreword by Lavinia Greenlaw, the work of nine poets and three illustrators. It was launched in London on September 6th, and received favourable mentions in The Guardian, The Rialto and elsewhere.
This year sees the launch of the the first S/S/Y/K CD, showcasing a range of musicians from London, Norwich and Paris, including Miss Sills, The Middle Ones, The Boycott Coca Cola Experience and many more. These artists treat genres like the meaningless divisions they are, spanning anti-folk to electronica, lyrical pop to sub bass, tape hiss to impressions. The limited edition CD contains original artwork by Zoe Taylor and comes with free badges of her specially commissioned pieces for S/S/Y/K. Release: August 2008.
S/S/Y/K (3) is launched in Norwich and London June 2009
S/S/Y/K has big plans for the future. Maybe too big. Who can say if history will hail them as visionaries or condemn them as fools? Whichever it may be, you can get involved and help them further the cause by signing up here.
What they say about S/S/Y/K–
"A remarkable gathering of emerging poets" – Lavinia Greenlaw
"Energy, maturity and sharpness" – George Szirtes
"The poems here provide a reality check on what has long been no more than poetic self-delusion" – James Sutherland-Smith
"Individualistic, anarchic, dissident, argumentative, fun. I wish I'd written some of these myself" – Hugo Williams
