Confusion overcomes me
I know not where to stand.
I'm like the falling of a leaf,
NOT KNOWING WHERE TO LAND.
I'm a single speck of dust,
Lost in a galaxy of sand.
My fear and fright control me,
so I've lived society's way.
I've always sensed my difference,
I've always known I was gay.
My courage finally surfaced,
and I embraced the day.
Hello world, I've found myself!
Hello world, I'M GAY!
I walk amongst the masses,
my head up, proud and strong!
I feel a pride within me,
self confidence, it's been to long!
My life is just beginning,
a beautiful life to be!
I live here in America,
where it's my right to be ME!
My freedom has been shattered,
struck down before my time.
Beat and battered and left to die,
a victim of a hateful crime!
Suddenly, my life is at it's ending,
My God, I'm going to die!
There is freedom in America,
Could this all have been a lie?
I've lived my life the best I could,
I've overcome all of my fears.
My brothers and sisters, don't morn for me!
Wipe away all those rainbow tears!
Out of the darkness,
there comes a light!
My spirit to you I send!!!
My death is a beginning!
not merely a tragic end.
I leave for you my courage,
I leave for you my life!
Take heart in always knowing...
I know longer feel any pain!
And know I have not left you,
I did not die in vain!
Forever I will be with you,
I'm am every drop of rain!
I am seen in every sunset,
I am heard in every refrain!
Please, don't hide back in your closets,
Don't succomb to your inner fears!
My life has had much meaning,
and will cause great change in future years!
Let my death give you strength!
Go out and be most bold!!
We are everybody's children!
Let the TRUTH be told!
Hold tight onto my memory!
Let it guide you throughout your days!
My name was MATTHEW SHEPARD!!
I WAS...I AM...I'M GAY
Matt's Nightmare
I am sitting in a bar
Just smoking and drinking
Two guys approach from afar
The booze clouds my thinking
They tell me they are gay
Would I like a ride home?
I give them my okay
I don't want to walk alone
They squeeze me between them
They demand my money
I give my wallet to them
They look at me funny
One whips me with a PAN!
I do not have enough pluck
I am a small, blond man
They drag me out of the truck
I can see the hatred in his eyes
The moonlight shines behind him
He raises the gunbutt to the skies
The blows make my blue eyes dim
The bonds bite into my wrists
I struggle with them behind me
I push the fence with my fists
As I feel the impacts grind me
I rapidly lose consciousness
As I hear my skull crack
I am in semiconsciousness
They resume the attack
I drift into alpha state
While I feel them burn me
They kick my groin with such hate
But it can't concern me
The pain in my head is intense
Please, God, please make it stop!
I'm losing the last of my sense
My head's a bloody mop
My legs buckle under me
I sit on the cold ground
My face plunges under me
I hang from wrists still bound
The Wyoming wind whistles around
I think of my family and wonder
I cannot utter a single sound
Where are my father and mother?
The air is freezing as I sit
I'm shoeless, full of fears
Where next my body will they hit?
My eyes wash blood with tears
I awake with a start
A dream had myth me
Matt, I had played thy part
Please, escape with me!
Hating others because they are different
Is a primitive form of ignorance
The projecting prejudice flows afferent
Blindly we practice too much forbearance
Oh, Matt, I felt the fear!
From death I could not thee protect
Buddy, I vow this year
Homophobia I reject.
Music
- Get Your Own
Scarecrow, they said.
You looked like a scarecrow,
Your arms outstretched, the wind blowing your hair.
What I Saw
A thing in human form, but somehow less than human.
Am I the only one?
I can't be the only one
Who looked at you and saw Jesus.
Wyoming Wind
had a friend I never knew,
just a shadow in the night.
He asked me, "Are you in or out,
and will you join the fight?"
So I listened through my deafness
to the sweetness of his song.
When I turned around to answer him,
I discovered he was gone.
Chorus:
But the song drifts along
on a soft Wyoming wind.
It's a lullabye of love and hope
and a yearning to begin
that quest for understanding
in the darkness of our souls.
No, I won't forget the melody
on the soft Wyoming Wind.
So I went back to the drawing board
with a modicum of shame.
Ripped the bandage from the sores
and administered the blame.
Yes, I've lived a lie of silence
with a blind eye towards the truth.
And a fear of ever facing
what I knew to be the truth.
[Chorus.]
I have seen the face of hatred;
it wears a thousand different masks.
Heard the voice of the self-righteous
preaching prejudice as fact.
Will I ever find the courage
to live completely free?
You need a guiding spirit
to find your inner peace.
Sometimes when it's late at night
I can almost see my friend.
A gentle smile upon his face
where the bloody tears had been.
And he reaches out to comfort me
saying, "It will be all right."
And he beckons me to follow him
from the shadows to the light.
[Chorus
One fall winter day
Cause of someone not caring
A friend they did find
My friend will no longer be sharing
His life was snatched
Before his time
And yes this is true
It was a crime
I believe in God
As many of us do
But for someone to do this
I want a revenge too
But I know this now
As I say this so
Matthew would not want
Us to stoop so low
So keep his name
Within your heart
And Matthew will live
And we never be apart

That being different doesn't Matter
It gave no one the Right
To take this Wonderful person from Us
And Burn Out his Shining Light
Matthew made a Difference
For all the World to See
And he will Have a place in All our Hearts
Eternally
Matthew is in Heaven Now
And is Watching From Above

...........................................................
The life and death of Matthew Shepard changed the way we talk about and deal with hate in the United States. For the past eight years, the legacy of this remarkable young man's life has challenged and inspired millions of individuals to erase hate in all forms. Although his life was short, it continues to have a great impact on both young and old alike.
The story of Matthew Shepard begins on December 1, 1976 when he was born prematurely to Judy and Dennis Shepard in the small city of Casper, Wyoming. Matthew attended school in Casper until his junior year of high school when he finished his primary education at The American School in Switzerland. His experience abroad fueled his love for travel. He took the opportunity to explore Europe and learn multiple languages including German and Italian.
Matthew was an optimistic and accepting young man. He always put his family and friends first and had a special gift of relating to almost everyone. He was the type of person that was very approachable and always looked to new challenges. Matthew had a great passion for equality and always stood up for the acceptance of people's differences. Throughout his life he expressed his love for acting by becoming very active in community theater both on and off stage.
Matthew's college career took him to a number of different universities and later ended up studying political science, foreign relations and languages at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. He was extremely interested in politics and was chosen as the student representative for the Wyoming Environmental Council.
The horrific events that took place shortly after midnight on October 7, 1998 went against everything that Matthew embodied. Two men, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, lead him to a remote area east of Laramie where they demonstrated unimaginable acts of hate. Matthew was tied to a split-rail fence where he was beaten and left to die in the cold of the night. Almost 18 hours later he was found by a cyclist who initially mistook him for a scarecrow.
Matthew died on October 12 at 12:53 am at a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. His entire family was by his side for the last few days of his life. His funeral was attended by friends and family from around the world and gained the appropriate media attention that brought Matthew's story to the forefront of the fight against hate.
This tragedy helped the nation wake up to the fact that hate and discrimination still lives in our communities, our schools and our families. Although his life was cut short, the impact of his spirit is great.
THROUGH JUDY'S EYES
"Matthew had an interest in politics and current news events. He was quite adept at understanding complex issues and was equally adept at expressing his opinions on these issues. He had such hopes for the future, his future. He was always anxious for the next step - the next stage of his life to begin. Every new step meant new challenges, new friends and new experiences. He knew that judging people before knowing them was the loss of an opportunity. He never understood why everyone didn’t think that way. Matthew felt there could be nothing better on this earth than another friend."
THROUGH DENNIS' EYES
"Matt’s gift was people. He loved being with people, helping people, and making others feel good. The hope of a better world, free of harassment and discrimination because a person was different, kept him motivated. All his life, he felt the stabs of discrimination. Because of that, he was sensitive to other people’s feelings. He was naive to the extent that, regardless of the wrongs people did to him, he still had faith that they would change and become "nice". Matt trusted people, perhaps too much. Violence was not a part of his life until his senior year in high school. He would walk into a fight and try to break it up. He was the perfect negotiator. He could get two people talking to each other again as no one else could."
"Matt loved people and he trusted them. He could never understand how one person could hurt another, physically or verbally. They would hurt him, and he would give them another chance. This quality of seeing only good gave him friends around the world. He didn’t see size, race, intelligence, sex, religion, or the hundred other things that people use to make choices about people. All he saw was the person. All he wanted was to make another person his friend. All he wanted was to make another person feel good. All he wanted was to be accepted as an equal."

Bloody America
This is a face of a bloody America
where boys don?t cry and girls lay wounded.
From old institution beds,
and the place where Matthew Shepherd died,
one man?s definition
of what a man is and what a woman is
and what love is,
creates graves out of prejudice.
I?m sorry, but the Moral Majority is immoral,
the Christian Coalition is un-Christian,
and the focus is a lack of values,
the values of life and freedom.
You claim to believe in Jesus,
and it?s Christ that you kill,
quoting scriptures as you slit his throat.
You call it love when you hate,
because you hate when people love.
You throw your victims as martyrs
for the sake of what you call the gospel
upon the coliseum floor of politics.
May the Father and Mother forgive you
for what you?ve done to their child.
May the Son forgive you,
as he bleeds,
for you don?t know what you do
or who you are

Ringgold High senior says school banned her gay date from prom; principal says homosexuality isn’t issue

Ashley Beaty Ashley Beaty, a senior at Ringgold High School, had planned to attend the school’s prom Saturday night. But she said she’s been prohibited from bringing her girlfriend, Nikki Heiskell, as her date because they’re gay.
Ringgold High principal Sharon Vaughn says that’s simply not the case. Homosexuality has nothing to do with it, she said.
Vaughn said Beaty can’t bring Heiskell because Heiskell left Ringgold High in poor standing.
If a student leaves the school in poor standing, the principal can prohibit the former student from attending a school-sanctioned event, Vaughn said.
Heiskell said she dropped out of Ringgold High this fall semester; otherwise it would be her senior prom as well. The couple have been dating since September 2006.
Beaty said she purchased prom tickets for herself and Heiskell at lunch Friday and then sat down for lunch. She said she was then approached by principal Vaughn and told she would have to return the tickets because it was not a “girl-girl” prom.
Beaty said Vaughn told her the prom was advertised as “boy-girl.” Beaty said she and Heiskell had not been previously denied entry to any school events.
Beaty said she returned the tickets and received a refund.
Vaughn said she encouraged Beaty to still attend the prom. She said she does not discourage homosexuals from attending prom, as long as they do not enter the prom as a couple because this can trigger unwanted media attention.
She added that prom attendees should dress gender-appropriate and that the Ringgold High prom is in fact a “boy-girl event at Ringgol
