There's a clue in the name - 'urban'. They, like the rest of us, want to stop the use of 'urban' 4x4s. No-one is suggesting that all SUVs should be banned, just their needless use in cities. Surely no-one can reasonably argue that they need such a huge, high-powered vehicle for taking their kids to school or driving to work and the supermarket.

Love the pathetic comments from Eat the Rich. once you get rid of all the 4x4's in Devon and Cornwall, i'll consider getting rid of mine.

Just one question.... What vehicles will you use on the farms? What vehicles will you use for search and rescue? What vehicles will you use in bad weather? Go on, get rid of all the RNLI, Coastguard, Surf Rescue, Mountain Rescue etc, Give them all smart cars? Stick to playing music till you understand waht getting rid of 4X4's means.

Thanks for the reply
When looking at carbon (and every other pollutant involved in manufacturing and using a car), one has to take into account the overall manufacturing 'costs', not just what goes into the car itself. The raw materials must be mined, melted, processed, shipped, melted, moulded, shaped, and assembled- the sheer power used in tis process is astronomical, as the raw materials can often be mined thousands of miles from where they are processed, which can be thousands of miles from where the car is assembled. And the car still hasnt got to Britain.

I'd be interested to know where you got the 85/15% statistic from, I wonder if any researched has been done recently into the carbon footprint of a car and how it's broken down.

My point was, it really isn't as simple as buying a new car, as it often isn't the best overall option.

Cheers Sam
It's a common question / response.

My personal feeling is it's better to choose the new car, as it will have updated pollution controls, better safety equipment inside and hopefully be more safely built for pedestrians as well, and I would expect it to be more fuel efficient.
In terms of the manufacture and disposal issue, the carbon from those processes only account for 15 % of the life cycle. 85% comes from the driving of the car.

So the old Landie Defenders are not very fuel efficient unless they are converted to run on chippy oil or LPG. And they are not really that safe unless used off road or on the farm.

Hope that helps

Sam - try and buy a 15 year old car that's not a 4x4!

Evening.

First of all, I'd like to say I understand completely your view that 4x4s are dangerous for everyone not inside them.

Secondly, I'd like to ask, on the pollution side of things (you've probably heard this before a million times); is it better to own an old 4x4 (say a 15 year old land rover defender) and not buy a new car, therefore not polluting through the manufacture of the new car and disposal of the old car, or is it better to scrap the old 4x4 and buy a new car (say a ford focus), polluting by manufacturing a new car and disposing of the old car, but having a car that pollutes less during use, and is safer for all?..

If that makes sense..

Thanks

Sam

I have rarely read such lame tosh as the comment below. Nothing demands a hefty power vehicle except, to quote from our song, "your ego and your second-hand dreams". And at least recognise that most nutters driving around the roads are driving 4x4s! You talk about feeling safe but it's only for the person driving the car - everyone else is in real danger from these urban tanks. They don't stop quickly and they're so armoured they induce feelings of invincibility in the driver. Face it - a 4x4/SUV is the ultimate F**K YOU car.

I hear the mud wash clip was on BBC2 recently - someone at work mentioned they saw me on TV but couldn't remember what the programme was. I hope it was showing the alliance's action in a good light :)

“Phil and I just had another kid. So of course we need a bigger SUV. Being a mom is hard, with soccer, football and lacrosse practice, so we bought the new Maibatsu Monstrosity. It’s so big… we lost little Joey in the back and couldn’t find him for and hour! When I’m rushing to the mall, or talking on my cell phone, I know me and my family are safe. The Maibatsu Monstrosity has 4-wheel drive, and in amphibious mode…it can cross rivers. So far I’ve only hit a few puddles, but it’s good to know it’s there. With the time I save taking shortcuts through the strip-mall parking lot I can focus on the important things. Like gazing longingly at the pool boy or…buying more exercise equipment off the TV. So what if it gets 3 miles to the gallon!? I’m a mom, not a conservationist!”
