    ***********************************************************
Its been 25 years since the first known case of this disease. It's no celebration to mark a quarter century of life with a deadly global pandemic. But looking back, the world can be proud of how it has fought back... Well, most of the time. It started as only five cases of a disease in a city of 3 million people... at three seprate hospitals... over a seven month period. Five gay men turned up with Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia in Las Angeles between October 1980 and May 1981. Physicans got to work trying to diagnose the accompanying illness and save lives of men, women and children who began showing up in epidemic numbers, and researchers puzzled over just what was happening. "IT", of course was HIV disease. Those earlier cases were described in a profoundly prophetic editorial note in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report." June 5, 1981: "Pneumocystis Carnii Pneumonia in the United States is almost exclusively limited to severly immuno-suppressed patients. The occurence of Pneumocystsis in these five previously healthy individuals without a clinically apparent immunodeficiency is unusual. " It's an understatement, looking back over the 25 years since those inital cases showed up. To use the word "unusual" to describe the devastating impact that HIV has had on the world. There have been some missteps and defeats over the decades, but there have been some milestone accomplishments as well. "5" The number of people worldwide who die of AIDS-Related complications every minute. People between 15 and 24 make up half of all new U.S. HIV infections. WHO'S AFFECTED: The proportion of new U.S. AIDS diagnoses has shifted by ethinicity over the years. 1985: 11-White, 5-Black, 3-Hispanic, 1-Other 2004: 5-White, 10-Black, 4-Hispanic, 1-Other. GENDER GAP NARROWS: U.S. AIDS diagnoses have increased dramatically among women since 1985-tripling in less than 20 years. 1985: MEN: 92%/WOMAN: 8%. 2004: MEN: 71%/WOMAN: 29%. EVOLVING EPIDEMIC: U.S. modes of HIV transmission have shown clear shifts in occurance since the beggining of the epidemic. MALE-MALE SEX: 1985: 65%/2004: 45% MALE-FEMALE SEX: 1985: 3%/2004:27%, INJECTION DRUG USE: 1985:19%/2004:22% OTHER/UNKNOWN: 1985: 13%/2004:6% ETHNIC DISPARITY: African-Americans and Hispanics are being hit disproportionately by HIV, together accounting for more than two thirds of new U.S. HIV infections occuring between 2001 and 2004. AFRICAN-AMERICANS: Percentage of U.S. population............. 12% Percentage of new HIV cases............... 51%. HISPANICS: Percentage of U.S. population............. 13% Percentage of new HIV cases............... 18%. WHITES: Percentage of U.S. population............. 70% Percentage of new HIV cases............... 29%. ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDERS: Percentage of U.S. population............. 4% Percentage of new HIV cases............... 1%. AMERICAN INDIANS/ALASKA NATIVES: Percentage of U.S. population............. 1% Percentage of new HIV cases.............. <1%. New HIV Diagnoses Among African American Men Output All Other Groups. African-American men bear the burden of new HIV infections in the United States, having an infection rate in 2004 seven times higher than white amd more than doubled the rate of Hispanic men. RATES OF HIV DIAGNOSES, 2004 (PER 100,000 POPULATION). AFRICAN-AMERICAN MEN: 131.6 AFRICAN-AMERICAM WOMEN: 67.0 HISPANIC MEN: 60.2 HISPANIC WOMEN: 16.3 AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKA NATIVE MEN: 20.8 AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKA NATIVE WOMEN: 7.7 WHITE MEN: 18.7 WHITE WOMEN: 3.2 ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER MEN: 13.9 ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER WOMEN: 401. A NEAR MAJORITY HOLDS FOR U.S. MEN WHO HAVE SEX WITH MEN. Prevalence rates of modes of HIV transmission for new cases diagnosed among black men between 2001 and 2004. MALE-MALE SEX: 49% HIGH-RISK HETEROSEXUAL CONTACT: 25% INJECTION-DRUG USE: 19% OTHER: 6%. Young people in the United States are at persistent risk for HIV infection. This risk is especially notable for youth of minority races and ethnicities. Continual HIV prevention outreach and education efforts, including programs on abstinence and on delaying the initiation of sex, are required as new generations replace the generations that benefited from earlier prevention strategies. Unless otherwise noted, this fact sheet defines youth, or young people, as persons who are 13–24 years of age. AIDS in 2004: An estimated 2,174 young people received a diagnosis of AIDS (5.1% of the estimated total of 42,514 AIDS diagnoses) and 232 young people with AIDS died. Estimated 7,761 young people were living with AIDS, a 42% increase since 2000, when 5,457 young people were living with AIDS. Young people diagnosed with AIDS during 1996–2004 lived longer than persons with AIDS in any other age group except those younger than 13 years. Nine years after receiving a diagnosis of AIDS. 76% of those aged 13–24 were alive, compared with 81% of those younger than age 13. 74% of those aged 25–34 70% of those aged 35–44 63% of those aged 45–54 53% of those aged 55 and older. Since the beginning of the epidemic, an estimated 40,059 young people in the United States had received a diagnosis of AIDS, and an estimated 10,129 young people with AIDS had died. They accounted for about 4% of the estimated total of 944,306 AIDS diagnoses and 2% of the 529,113 deaths of people with AIDS.

    About this page:
I have been very active in Domestic Violence causes all of my adult life. I noticed a need in the world pertaining to Same Sex Domestic Violence. It happens more than people know. Unfortunately there are a number of gay people who barely consider themselves worthy or valued as a gay person much less a Domestic Violence Victim. There are also very limited resources, statistics, or information, for Same Sex Domestic Violence. Hopefully through empowerment and education we can change some of this. :D
