Storm's Interests
|
| General | Jazz saxophone, writing, storm chasing, home brewing, weight lifting, native plants and ecosystems, singing and song writing, hiking, fishing, upland game hunting, biking, kayaking and canoing...really, pretty much anything outdoors. I love to hop in the car and drive through the countryside. Where? Anywhere, so long as I can take the back roads, where there's more to see that's truly worth seeing. I may wind up at a nature preserve, or at some restaurant I've never visited before--or one of a number of eateries that have become my favorites. Care to join me? | | Music | Jazz, jazz, jazz! Especially jazz saxophone (what else would you expect from a sax player?). Michael Brecker, Phil Woods, Cannonball Adderly, and David Sanborn are some of my favorites. But name a sax player and I've probably listened to, enjoyed, and learned from him. Coltrane, Bird, Grover...Dave Koz, Eric Marienthal, Art Pepper, Paul Desmond...the list goes on. But don't take me for a jazz purist. This world is filled with so many different styles, and I like most of them and can find something worthwhile in all of them. I love bluegrass and Celtic music, and I cut my teeth on the prog rock of the seventies and eighties. Jethro Tull was, and remains, a favorite. In years past, I played a lot with black gospel choirs and groups. These days, I do a fair number of blues gigs, and most of my recording projects have been with friends who write largely in a sort of eclectic rock mode. | | Books | I think more in terms of favorite authors than individual titles. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Mark Twain, Philip Yancey, Dave Barry, Pat McManus, Garrison Keillor (I'm a huge fan of his radio show, "A Prairie Home Companion"), Robert Louis Stephenson, the nature writer Edwin Waye Teale...the list goes on. I read books on weather to help me develop my expertise as a storm chaser. Lately, I've been reading some marketing books to help me expand my copywriting skills. And I read the Bible to help me hear and know God. |

Alto saxophonist. This is my area of expertise. However, I'm also a latent singer/songwriter.
Along with that, I play passable rhythm guitar, and enough keyboard to accompnay myself in a pinch.

About me:
What is it you're passionate about? I'm talking about the things that really light your fuse--the talents and pursuits God has hardwired into you to help make this world a better place. Not the things you CAN do. The things you LOVE to do.
I have a number of interests I can't not do. Writing is one. Playing the saxophone is another. And storm chasing is right up there with the first two.
But those are just for starters. I'm a connoisseur of the outdoors and a fervent nature nut. Native plants and ecosystems have fascinated me since I was a kid. Don't--PLEASE don't--consign me to a postage-stamp backyard in the city. I enjoy all the hustle and bustle, the things to do and sights to see, the museums and restaurants and concerts and hangouts; and of course, I play my music in town, not out in a cow pasture. (Well, sometimes I actually do play my sax for the cows, but that's a story for my blogs, not here.) But when I go home, I want it to be somewhere where I can see the stars at night and hear the crickets and katydids ratcheting in the fields. Give me fireflies, and the smell of rain in country air, and the slant of the afternoon sun on an October landscape.
Enough for now. I'm new to MySpace and am in the process of building this site and getting my blogs underway. I'll have much to say about a variety of subjects, including--because this is an integral part of who I am--how they relate organically to what it's like to live as a follower of Jesus. Ooooh, did you just tighten up on me when I said that? Hey, relax. Notice my use of the word "organic." Not high-phosphate religion, but earthy, commonsense spirituality that actually integrates with what life in this beautiful, fractured world is really like. No matter what your belief system is, you may find some surprises here. So stay tuned. And blessings to all of you who take an interest.
Warmly,
Storm

Who I'd like to meet:
Fellow musicians, songsmiths, writers, editors, lovers of Jesus and all spiritual sojourners, and anyone who possesses the winsome ingredients of thoughtfulness, depth, and honesty; a nutty sense of humor; a compassionate spirit; and a thirst to live as big and wild at heart as you were created to be.
I do NOT wish to meet one-night-stands, "friends with privileges," or women who think a hot exterior can substitute for inner beauty. Show me an actual person, not just a photo; otherwise, I'm not interested.
Also, I'm getting some friendship requests with names and ages, but no photos and no information. Come on, now. If someone came knocking on your front door whom you couldn't see and who wouldn't tell you anything about him- or herself, would you let that person in? Please fill out your profile before you come knocking.
