*****STORMING THE BASE PRESENTS:
TWO XANDRIA
RE-ISSUES THIS X-MAS FOR ARTOFFACT!!

XANDRIA "KILL THE SUN"
A brief Internet search on the subject of “Xandria”
is
more than likely to come up with a sex toy palace for grown-ups; for the
time being, anyway, because the World-Wide Web is about to be complemented by a number
of fan sites that promise even greater pleasures. The reason for this impending development stems from
the “metropolis” of Bielefeld in eastern Westphalia. While
this location may not exactly sound
like the magical source of a new musical revelation, what the heart of
Westphalia lacks in terms of spiritual aura is about to be compensated for by one
of the most exciting new bands in the gothic metal genre.
The band’s founder,
Marco, considers the “tearing down of the hard
façade”, as he aptly characterizes the development
from the death metal of the late Eighties to the much more
complex contemporary dark metal scene, the pivotal point of Xandria’s
work.
Consequently, the quintet don’t revel in any kind of musical muscle play but demonstrate toughness
only where a track’s dramaturgy requires it. It’s the melodies that matter, and yes, these
may occasionally sound a little more poppy than the metal scene’s ideologists will approve of. But
once you’ve come to accept the fact that
pop and commercialism do not necessarily
have to go hand in hand, you’ll discover that there can be only
one winner whenever these widely accepted borders are crossed: a good song. And precisely this
is what happens ten times in succession on “Kill the Sun”.
By reflex action, you
could award Xandria a label like “Germany’s answer to Lacuna Coil,
Nightwish, After Forever and Within
Temptation
”, but these comparisons don’t do
justice to the material’s diversity. Xandria know how do deal
with
influences in our age of post-modernism: in precisely the same measure that band names become
synonymous with certain atmospheres and emotions that due to their complexity would otherwise be difficult
to put into adequate words, quotation becomes a legitimate medium for musicians that refuse to be
held back by the stylistic catalogue of the
contemporary gothic scene, but consciously orientate
themselves to its sound range. Xandria quote easily and without any inhibition, at
the same time they submit all references to other artists to their own creative process,
using them, as it were, in virtuoso style as abstract instruments.

XANDRIA "INDIA" XANDRIA have
returned! The most successful German goth rock act featuring a "female
voice" are back with a vengeance, following the reissue of their bestseller
Ravenheart. Entitled India, the recording was again produced by Jose
Alvarez-Brill (Wolfsheim , among others), and even though
XANDRIA aficionados are getting what they expect, some things are "different".
The songwriting on India is a lot more "contemporary", the guitars, still gently
emphasized on Ravenheart, have undeniably gained significance. India pushes
ahead and explodes, epic bombast rock meeting metal guitars and vocalist Lisa's
irresistible charm. Although the title, India, implies that what we have here is
a concept album with an oriental leitmotif, this is in fact not quite the case.
Basically, India is a synonym for the quest for meaning and the great aims of
life, a theme which runs throughout the whole album. "As a result of his search
for India, Columbus achieved something very different to what he expected,"
explains band founder, Marco. "That's the way things frequently are. Going
through life, you have a lot of goals, and on your path to achieving these goals
you encounter things that may turn out to be much more important and greater
than your original goal." Next to numerous crushers like the title track India
with its Nightwish leanings, or the almost frighteningly oppressive Widescreen,
XANDRIA's single release In Love with the Darkness proves that they have held on
to their feel for great melodies. In Love with the Darkness is an anthem for the
constantly growing gothic community and impresses with catchy hooklines and a
considerable amount of hit appeal. On India, the five musicians from Bielefeld
rock for all they're worth, letting their bombastic sound run free and even
enlisting a real string section this time around, instead of relying on taped
material. Numerous string passages feature the renowned Deutsches
Filmorchester Babelsberg, who also contributed the music to the
blockbuster movie, Schindler's List, and have worked with other top acts like
Rammstein and Rosenstolz. Not only is this
orchestral bombast – so characteristic of XANDRIA – allowed to blossom, their
love of Irish folk music also shines through again clearly on tracks such as
Like a Rose on the Grave of Love or The End of Every Story. This haunting
authenticity may, among other things, be due to the fact that a popular Irish
folk band was enlisted. And the five certainly
aren't
content with restricting themselves to bombastic elements, as many other bands seem to be doing
at the moment, but have created a veritable treasure chest of musical fantasies: bombast is
fine, but only where the dramaturgy demands it. Instead, there is a lot of diversity, one
of the band's trademarks, thanks to quiet atmospheric
parts, progressive Seventies sounds or songwriting
inspired by several decades of rock history. India is definitely a great album.
XANDRIA continue on their chosen path, and it will be interesting to see where it
will lead them. Released on Artoffact and available December 4th, 2009.

ARTOFFACT
RECORDS PRESENTS: HAGGARD!!

HAGGARD "TALES FROM ITHIRIA" BEST-SELLING SYMPHONIC-METAL ACT IS RELEASED BY
ARTOFFACT!!
The eternal battle of good
against evil is a recurring universal theme in the history of mankind,
spanning the most diverse forms of art throughout the centuries. Frequently, these concepts
have been marked by clichéd thought patterns, but the thin
line between light and darkness is rarely easy to define or recognise. "Tales Of Ithiria"
is Haggard's very own saga about this eternal battle and takes place
in the fantastic world of "Ithiria".
The album sees the German
classic metal act leave the path of human history for the first time since they
got together in 1991 to devote themselves to the realm of fantasy. A
reorientation and reclamation of virgin soil which doesn't come as a total
surprise, seeing that all the great authors of the fantasy genre have a history
background, finding their inspiration in mankind's real past. And for Asis
Nasseri, creative mastermind of this sizeable chamber orchestra which has come
together under the name of Haggard, the journey into fictitious spheres is an
expansion of his own horizons which allows plenty of room for new possibilities.
"I have to admit that I left the field of real history with a heavy
heart," he recalls the early days of his work on
"Tales Of Ithiria". "I'm very interested in history, and there
was a variety of themes that I would like to have written about – but
this history thing has become almost normal for Haggard, and I consciously
wanted to leave that familiar path."
Expressive multi-faceted
music, excellent songwriting between complexity and sensitive melodic arches and
harmonious arrangements have always been among Haggard's strengths and have
reached truly fantastic new levels on "Tales Of Ithiria". So it should come as
no surprise when the melancholy legend "Hijo De La Luna" from Iberia shines in a
sensitive and at the same time dark metallic outfit, emphasised by operatic
magic, in line with the traditional songs which Haggard have recorded in the
past, such as the old Swedish ballad "Herr Mannelig". And once more this
experiment blends harmoniously into Haggard's sonic realm, into a dreamy cosmos
full of enigmatic characters, such as Edris, Hammar, Sveldja, Wiese, Grimmbart
and Alar, who battle over virtues such as courage, gallantry, honour, mercy
and tolerance.
So enter the halls of the king and
allow yourselves to be enchanted by the stories of Ithiria! Released on
Artoffact and available December 4th, 2009.

THE
69 EYES
"BACK IN BLOOD"
THE 69 EYES
return with their ninth studio album, 'Back in Blood,'
12 goth ‘n’ roll anthems guaranteed to rock the crypt.
“Unsurprisingly, the main inspiration for the album came from the vampire realm,” vocalist
Jyrki 69 explains. “It’s almost like vampires are taking over the world!” he muses
referring to the current ‘Twilight’ mania. The first single will be the tongue-in-cheek
‘Dead Girls Are Easy’ – a nasty power anthem for sleazy
pin-ups complete with a sing-a-long chorus aimed at those online chicks with
the looks that kill! The video will be directed by MTV superstar and
close friend Bam Margera, who was also responsible for the
Eyes’ rock homage to ‘80s cult movie ‘The Lost Boys’. Matt Hyde’s
(Slayer, Monster Magnet) ultra-tight production has brought the danger back to THE 69 EYES’ sound. The
artwork has been designed by Estevan Oriol, whose work has graced countless covers from
Cypress Hill to The Transplants and Snoop Dogg. “We’ve worked so
hard over the last two years,” says Jyrki. “We played around 125 shows worldwide
but all our sacrifices paved the way for the birth of
this baby. ‘Back In Blood’ is a culmination of 20 years worth of hard work.”
