  • Bio

TONGUES is DEAD. LONG LIVE STORYBOOK FUNERAL. Tongues consisted of well-established Chicago musicians from hard-rock bands of legend like Apocalypse Hoboken (Todd Paglialong– Vocals; Andy Peterson – Drums), Joan of Arc (Erik Bocek – Bass), American Draft (Sean Shipley – Lead Guitar), Veterans (Francis Gilbert – Lead Guitar), Mexican Cheerleader, The House That Gloria Vanderbilt, VICELORDS, An Automotive, Ghosts & Vodka, and at least a dozen more now defunct touring outfits. This meeting of skilled veterans unleashed their self-titled debut in June 2008 as the premier release for the Coach House Collective label. It is now available on vinyl as well. Lose the iPod. Take a deep breath and keep on reading. .. .. In a rhythmic marriage of often fast-paced and precisely arranged melancholy, combined with dueling, yet harmoniously symbiotic guitar ecstasy, this tune-laden powerhouse lay the construct for the ever-evolving vocalist Todd Paglialong (aka Mr. Todd Pot) to redefine the definition of "pop sensibilities". With a varied and odd music history under their delicious licorice whip belts, the often sardonic and provocative Tongues lovingly bring the intensity of youth's bad choices with the rancor and wisdom of an adult's hard-earned prerogative to stop being a pussy. Delivering 12 original songs in 45 minutes plus change, Tongues cuts to the quick and never stops swinging. .. .. Breathe .. .. "Tongues ease the sleaze with aural sex appeal and riffs for days. While I was typing this Tongues just wrote another song. Make your crotch wet. Join the order. Tongues is for loverzzz. And zoophiliacs. Remember when grunge was a thing people talked about? So do they. For fans of Roxy Music and Kyuss." – The Continental (Issue 3) .. .. .. .. Your Starting Lineup: .. .. Todd Paglialong rode the rails as a hobo for three years before settling down with an adopted family in the suburbs. He uses words, often words that people don't like. You may have seen him in bands like Apocalypse Hoboken, The Traitors, Vicelords, The House That Gloria Vanderbilt, jewsteeth, he-man, and werewolfs or he may have even sold you drugs once. .. .. Andy Peterson has recently come down from the trees and drinks more often than he should. You may have seen him in bands like Apocalypse Hoboken, Mexican Cheerleader, or as part of the March of Dimes parade. Some know him as The Necromanager. Some don't know him at all. .. .. Erik Bocek always has an interesting haircut and he's fragrant like a convenience store. You may have seen him in bands like An Automotive, Ghosts & Vodka, Joan of Arc, Tetsuo, and about 50 others. He's afraid of clouds, clowns, and chancres. At least he says nice things about you. .. .. Frank G is a renaissance man-mountain of guitar riffage; a bon vivant for whom the parts can't be written fast enough. Though he is originally from Chicago, he has spent much time on both coasts with various bands such as Dojo, Scotchberg, Double Meat, Mongrel, et al. He also does session work for 5.1 Music Inc and others. Frank is really, really high right now. .. .. Sean Shipley was born on a commune in Summertown, TN, destined for a meandering life of utter inconsequence. A vagabond musician writing and performing music for the past 15 years, Sean currently resides in Chicago and can be seen performing with a variety of acts including Tongues and American Draft. Sean rarely wears anything beneath his dress. .. .. You should come see us sometime. We'll put a hump on a camel's back. .. .. ..

  • Sounds Like

Brian Johnson and Bon Scott assraped Bill Cosby at Tom Waits' house .. .. Mike Frame ; Razorcake: .. ...what a combination of Shudder To Think and AmRep records might sound like. ...fans of the overall rosters of Dischord, Touch And Go, or Homestead would find a whole lot to love here. Last tune has a bit of a Lee Harvey Oswald Band vibe, which makes it my favorite song here. .. .. Ryan K. Prado - Alternative Press June 2009: .. Lick it up. ***1/2 .. The Chicago post-punk family tree has a new branch from which to prune, and Tongues might be it's ripest growth in years. The conglomerate (featuring members of Apocalypse Hoboken, Joan of Arc, and Ghosts and Vodka) stitches together a quilt of unapologetic cock-rock, sludgy guitar interplay and enveloping drums, matched in outlandishness only by the sassy vocal singe of Mr. Todd Pot. Lyrically, "Bukowski Dating Service" plunges into the absurd ("a former high school athlete is what you're not/to comb the hair of retards and wipe the drips of snot"). But for all the melodic counterbalance, there remains a healthy dose of machismo and mirth that'll put a smile on your face. This is middle America's answer to Eagles Of Death Metal. (COACHHOUSECOLLECTIVE;coachhousecollective.com) .. .. Jim DeRogatis; Chicago Sun Times 07/13/2008: .. .. Though Tongues is a young group just now celebrating the D.I.Y. release of its self-titled debut, the sleaze-rock quintet has a celebrated pedigree, including two former members of punk heroes Apocalypse Hoboken, vocalist Todd Paglialong and drummer Andy Peterson, and a bassist, Erik Bocek, from Joan of Arc. They join impressive dual lead guitarists Sean Shipley and Francis Gilbert to create a hardcore but melodic metal/punk hybrid that seems to have been designed as the perfect soundtrack for the neighborhood biker bar or S&M club (that is, providing you live in that sort of neighborhood). .. .. Thankfully, the only thing heavy here is the music: One look at the titles of endearingly hard-hitting tunes such as "Bukowski Dating Service," "Meatgum" and "Scatalogically Speaking" is indicative of the group's sarcastic lyrical take on its favorite debaucheries. "For fans of Roxy Music and Kyuss," is how one fanzine summed things up, and it's hard to find a better description. .. .. Matteson Kamin; www.rockandrollreport.com .. The Chicago band Tongues got together to create something different. And with the many different bands the members of the band have been in, the "something different" they wanted to create was almost a guarantee. The band's recently released self-titled album contains their unusual style. With such titles as: Scatologically Speaking, and Bulkowski Dating Service, the listener is in for one heck of a ride. .. The band's humor is evident in Bulkowski Dating Service in lines like this: "A former high school athlete is what you're not. To comb the hair of retards and wipe their drips of snot." And of course, the song Meathooks and Chopping Blocks (aside from having a great title) also contains humor. Two lines from this song include: "No longer alive, a cup of dust quenches his thirst." And "The day the world ends is the day that he is saved." .. The humor in the band's lyrics and the difference in the combination of styles that make up the band's sound help to create a unique album. If you like finding something different in your music selection once in a while, then the self-titled album by Tongues may be just what you are looking for.
