STRACT: is a sharp, reflective, lyrically inclined wordsmith. A self proclaimed student of hip hop, Stract has worked at perfecting his craft for over a decade. He prides himself on lyricism and hopes to take his music beyond the realm of commercialism. His music is an eclectic cross between the neo soul movement and street conscious rap. His style combines the lyricism of an artist like Black Thought and the political and social awareness of a group like Dead Prez.
The moniker STRACT stands for Spittin the Raw Artifactz Creatin Thought. For Stract, hip hop is more than an art form. It is a unique opportunity to use music as a platform to address social ills and the plight of the black community. Through his music he hopes to address both the beautiful and debilitating aspects of street life. He speaks about drugs, street life, incarceration, broken homes, and a plethora of other issues without glorifying them. He captures what is to be a black male in society. His music is less concerned with extravagant jewelry and material possessions and more geared at increasing black consciousness. Even in the songs where poverty and desperation are the theme there is a positive underlying message. His name truly embodies his mentality as an emcee. Stract truly hopes to "spit true and real experiences" in order to heighten the listeners awareness.
As an artist Stract is incredibly talented. His craftiness and creative prose are evident on each track; but beyond rhyming he displays other musical talents throughout his album. He demonstrates his vocal ability on tracks like "HOME" and "Thankful." Stract is also a gifted bass player and an aspiring drummer. All these skills add to Stract's depth as an artist. His abilities span beyond the common rapper/producer boasts and show a larger appreciation for music. His mastery of certain instruments and of various styles of music shows his larger appreciation of music.
His debut album Doing My.s.e.l.f. (Songs Enable Life Forever) is a treat for all listeners. The title describes his refusal to conform to certain commercial themes within hip hop. He appreciates artistry and integrity and places it above everything when composing his music. Ultimately, Stract is an emcee's emcee, a rapper's rapper. He creates music that will resonate with both the common listener and the artists.
