Kid Canaveral
Kid Canaveral are two boys and two girls, who make indie-pop music you can sing and dance along to. Formed in 2004, in St Andrews, they are David MacGregor (voice & guitar), Dan Sheehy (drums), Kate Lazda (voice & guitar), and Rose McConnachie (voice & bass). Over the past few years they’ve been busy writing and perfecting their noble craft, playing a barrage of live shows; notable gigs include opening for Joy Zipper, KT Tunstall, King Creosote, Camera Obscura, Glasvegas and Emma Pollock.
After re-locating to Edinburgh in 2006 they have performed at a number of festivals including The Wickerman Festival, The Fence Homegame (for the last three years), goNorth and Glasgow’s ‘La Fete de la Musique’ - as well as receiving national radio airplay on Steve Lamacq’s BBC Radio 1 show and on Vic Galloway’s Radio 1 and Radio Scotland shows.
In 2007 Smash Hits was Single of the Week on Jim Gellatly’s XFM show and a video of the single was featured on The Music Show on BBC2.
Second single “Couldn’t Dance/Teenage Fanclub Song”, released June 2008, has received yet more airplay than its predecessor, including in North America and Europe, with the band featuring as Jim Gellatly’s XFM X-posure artist in its week of release.
Praise for Kid Canaveral
"Evocative lyrics, super indie guitars and some striking girl/guy vocal dynamics, 'the Kids really are alright" Jock Rock
"Juicy, chewy pop-kids to savour, proving that life still twitches in this indie guitar-pop business." Paul Whitelaw, The Scotsman
"It’s amazing how even their brand new pop-punk songs embed themselves in the brain, while single ‘Smash Hits’ could easily be just that." The List
"Kid Canaveral’s David MacGregor laments some poor bastard’s plight over this considered piece of up-tempo indie pop which echoes the Delgados at their most playful. Smash Hits is a refreshingly pleasant wee tune. 4 out of 5." - The Skinny
"Kid Canaveral’s debut single, Smash Hits, is the kind of joyous buzzsaw racket that’s so simple and so very effective you wonder why people don’t make it more often...They sound like they’re armed with the knowledge that music peaked in 1976 with the first Ramones album (although the Shop Assistants were pretty good) and consequently Smash Hits is the kind of dumb punk pop that so very few get right. Fewer still get it as right as this. Go and listen to them" - Fire Escape Talking
"Bouncy, quirky, often laugh-out-loud funny, 'Smash Hits' has, well smash hit written all over it. Plus it includes the line "stick it up your arse/I don't care if you think my music taste's shite". What more could you ask for? 4 out of 5" Is This Music?
"a joyous, bouncy piece of classic Scottish indie-pop...an engaging, humorous story punchily delivered by an irrepressible wee tune." - Song, by Toad
"THE best thing to come out of St Andrews since KT Tunstall, the four-piece indie-poppers deserve just as much success...the sort of super-infectious melodies The Magic Numbers would give their bushy beards for...Picking out the best songs is a bit like trying to pick your favourite child: impossible." - Daily Record
"Their charisma lies in their self-consciousness...Kid Canaveral are a bit like The Breeders arguing about relationships with REM at a coffee morning organised by The Undertones. In other words, the kids are all right." - Barry Gordon, The Scotsman
"Superb...Kid Canaveral threatened to upstage the headliners - and possibly did in the eyes of many people. Current single Smash Hits is typical of their trademark sound - melodic and radio-friendly. There is no attempt to dilute the Scottish accent which distinguishes them from the plethora of bands accentuating South of England accents at the moment, and I would be surprised if we do not hear a lot more of this two boy/two girl combination in 2008." - Artrocker Magazine
"Bouncing in on as much adequately turbulent lo-fi charm as ever, Kid Canaveral's latest single sees the Edinburgh foursome doing what they do best; wrapping their tales of social strife in more hooks than John Prescott at an egg farm....eight minutes of spiky-pop brilliance makes up these two tracks...adds to their unmistakably ace army of tunes. 4 out of 5" - Is This Music? (Couldn't Dance/TFS Single Review)
"Forming in 2004 the band have since been working up quite a following, and in their new single 'Couldn't Dance' you can hear the years of hard work paying off. It's evident in this track that this band knows how to take their music seriously but not themselves, they sound like their having a good time playing it together and this rubs off on you from the first listen. If you like Glasvegas or The Fraggles or hopefully both, then give Kid Canaveral's "Couldn't Dance" a listen and you won't be disappointed." - TSM Radio
"Next up is one of Scotland's best new bands Kid Canaveral, who had already won us over with dynamite pop nuggets 'Smash Hits' and 'Couldn't Dance'. Their new AA side single however sees the taking in Grrrl Group femme-pop ('Second Time Around') and yet another super-catchy dose of Scotia indie with 'Missing Me'." - Clash Magazine
"What is it about Scots and indie pop? the two seem to go hand in hand. Give a Scot a guitar and he will bash out a catchy as hell song that will make you pogo about in your room for days. Edinburgh's Kid Canaveral is no exception. In other words this band have a magic touch with music. As I know you'll never hear songs this honest and worm their way into your eardrums so quick. Brilliant, Brilliant stuff that needs to be heard! This is your new favourite band!" - Vindictive Jukebox
Come On Gang!
Come On Gang! met at the Edinburgh College of Art, although they're from all over the place - bassist Trev from Dublin, guitarist Mikey from Galashiels, and drummer and singer Sarah from sunny Brighton. They'd all individually advertised for people who loved energetic riffs, lyrics with real substance, and rhythm that feet can't help but dance to. And had short, brown, messy hair. (no, that was just coincidence.) Hey presto, they met, turned on the amps, picked up the sticks, and were away!
That was a year ago, and they've just had their anniversary. They've been busy ever since, playing with bands like Glasvegas, The Pistolas, Angus and Julia Stone, the Chap... They play hard and fast, tempered by lilting female vocals. They love playing and you'll love listening. We dare you not to dance.
Praise for Come On Gang!
"The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Roxy Music and Franz Ferdinand...to that list, add Come On Gang!" Edinburgh Evening News
"Unsigned Hereos" Vic Galloway Show, BBC Radio Scotland
"Who to listen out for in 2008? Edinburgh College of Art students Come On Gang! could take the next step up this year" Edinburgh Evening News
""What hits you first is the juxtoposition of Sarah's voice with the noisy punk blueprint, and that's EXACTLY WHAT MAKES IT WORK AND PUTS THEM ABOVE THE OTHERS!" Daily Record
"Come On Gang! scream difference and urge you to have a closer listen. The band can play their instruments not only with a great passion, but also with such intensity that guarantees them a chance at being one of Edinburgh's finest unheard sounds." Susan Ford Music Reviews
"Spiky pop with overtones of the Strokes and T Rex." Clyde 1 Radio
"Come On Gang! soon show that they have more to their repertoire than merely crashing drums and clashing guitars: A juxtaposition of soft poetic vocals and power punk riffs." The Skinny
"When the drums and the angular guitar hooks of Coming Home ignites the audience, they hold their own. Singer/drummer Sarah Tanat Jones has a voice like an angel. The oft-used ‘ones to watch’ seems entirely apt here." The Skinny
"Come on Gang! were worth waiting for. Their dynamic shouldn’t really work alongside the raw, noisy garage-punk fire of ‘Wheels’ and ‘Bang’, but a performance where such dissonant elements fell together nicely snared the attention without mercy. We say: like Beth Orton fronting Television." The List ****
"As they fire through a truly electric set, each and every song sounds like a hit, this tight and talented band have everything going for them, not to mention the vibe of closeness they have both on and off stage. Wheels would not sound out of place in the current charts and as Sarah sings “I'm dancing, I'm dancing from the chorus (of Spinning Room), it really feels like a great night is upon us.” The Fanzine, Dance Disaster Collective
"The future looks bright for Come On Gang!" The Skinny
"Perhaps Come On Gang! can bring Edinburgh College Of Art to the fore in the same way that Franz Ferdinand publicized Glasgow Art School? There are certainly many fans in Scotland that seem to think so. Mixing in the right circles and writing the right kind of songs, if new single 'Wheels' is anything to go by, when lead singer Sarah Tanat Jones breaks into full swing they take it up a notch or two." CMU 'Snap of The Day' Artist
“Pretty much everyone I know has seen them and rate them very highly. This, however, is the first time that I have caught Come On Gang! live. As a friend of mine said, you can hear the record in there, and their single release party is approaching, so that’ll definitely be one I stretch my pocket money to buy. “ Songbytoad.com
"This trio knock out a tremendous line in shimmering, melodic guitar growl topped with the brittle vocal brilliance of Sarah Tanat Jones. Their single Wheels, an upbeat, twitchy anthem, sounds like a choir girl wandering into a bedroom full of boys and fuzzy, throbbing guitars. It's the combo of her folky, sweet vocals aginst a garage-rock squall that has been getting the press dribbling with excitement." The List
"'Wheels' by Come On Gang! boasts blustery riffs and bewitching vocals, which are a gentle reminder that there is still some creativity left in modern music." The List ****
"Top 20 Must see bands at T in the Park 2008" The Scotsman
