Review from Surface unsigned 2009!........
The first band of the night was Leicester based four-piece Strange Gods. They’ve got a sound that successfully mixes elements of classic and contemporary Rock for a broodingly atmospheric noise cut-through with energetic guitars. Andy’s got a great, distinctive vocal, subtle yet powerful and deeply evocative – it suits their sound perfectly. They delivered a tight and compelling performance that set a high standard for the other acts to follow.
Early in 2005, and after some local success, drummer Lee Gibson and guitarist Steve Fowler decided to leave Leicester based ‘Kained and Able’. With the obligatory ‘musical differences’ sited as the reason for the split, Steve and Lee decided to form their own band. And so begins the story of what was to become the midland towns premier (unsigned) rock band.. With Bassist Dave Tillyard joining in the winter of 2005 and vocalist Andy Wardle in spring 2006, the STRANGE GODS line up was complete.
There is a real sense, in the band, that this was all somehow 'meant to be'. Drummer Lee Gibson was browsing Ebay for an entirely unrelated item and came across an advert for the band Steve Fowler was playing in. Vocalist Andy Wardle was on Friends reunited and decided to contact old friend Lee, who just happened to be looking for what was to become the last piece in the Strange Gods jigsaw.
Since the bands inception in 2005 “The Gods” have gone from strength to strength, composing over 30 songs and playing numerous gigs in and around Leicester, whilst building up a solid and loyal fan base. Professional interest in the band is building. One promoter recently asked, “Are you signed? No? Well you really should be!”
STRANGE GODS continue to impress with their powerful, emotive and eclectic brand of alternative rock. Their live shows are a musical rollercoaster that fans have variously described as “brilliant”, “inspirational”, “like a private U2 gig”, the list of superlatives goes on.
STRANGE GODS are truly a band on the move. Get along to a gig soon!
After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace... Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (see my blog for details): CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY
As gospellers have said, Beneath signalling skies, On land dusty to tread, A trough in a stable Was the strawy first-bed Of a divine baby - The forgiving Godhead.
A season for new hope - There then and here now; The yuletide of goodwill - There then and here now.
In respect of this chance, Beneath bright or dark skies, Faith's the star that we glance Attending Christ's churches And trying to enhance, With singing and ritual, Our God-loving stance.
